The Lynn Classical girls basketball team picked up a milestone win Thursday evening, securing its 10th win and guaranteeing itself a spot in the state tournament after knocking off Medford by a score of 59-28 in a Greater Boston League bout.
Ava Thurman scored 18 points to pace the Rams offense, while Lauren Wilson and Akiyah Brown each scored 10 points.
But even more important than the scoring, according to Classical coach Tom Sawyer, was the Rams’ defensive play.
“The girls set the tone early with their defensive pressure,” said Sawyer.
Classical (10-3) travels to Swampscott Monday (7).
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Lynn Tech 54, Academy of Notre Dame 25
The Tigers were led by Dayana Hios-Edwards, who scored 26 points to pace the Tech offense.
Tech (6-4) travels to Pioneer Charter Monday (5:45).
Winthrop 40, Danvers 31
Maddie Stiglets led the way for the Vikings with 11 points, while Grace Fleuriel was close behind with nine points.
Winthrop (8-5) travels to Masconomet Tuesday (7).
BOYS BASKETBALL
Lynn Classical 45, Medford 43
The Rams squeezed out the close victory on the road to keep itself alive in the Greater Boston League race.
Jadden Gonzalez was the leading scorer for Classical in the win with 16 points, while Tyler Wilson scored 10 points to help the effort.
Classical (5-6) plays on the road at Everett Tuesday (7).
Lynn English 65, Revere 44
The Bulldogs put together a strong defensive effort and never looked back in the home victory at Paul F. Cavanagh Fieldhouse.
Tyrese Melo Garcia notched a double-double in the win, putting up 24 points and 12 rebounds to go along with five assists. Nelson Obarisiagbon also had a double-double with 10 points and 18 rebounds, while Denzell Guillen notched 12 points.
English (9-2) hosts Somerville Tuesday (7).
Revere was led by Domenic Boudreau’s 13 points and five rebounds, while Hamza Ghoul added six points, 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Revere (5-4) hosts Medford Monday (7).
Masconomet 53, Saugus 50
Jeury Barbosa and Ben Tapia-Gately each scored 13 points in the loss for the Sachems, while Tyrone Manderson contributed 11 points.
Saugus (6-3) has a quick turnaround with a home game against Peabody Friday (7).
WRESTLING
Marblehead/Swampscott 48, Gloucester 33
Marblehead/Swampscott 43, Triton 33
The Black and Blue got two wins each from Connor O’Brien (113 pounds), Will Woodward (132), Noah Faverman (138), Nicolai Tarason (160), Diego Knight (170/182) and Ned Fitzgerald (195). Also picking up wins on the night were Liam O’Brien (106), Devin DiBarri (120), Clive Connolly (126), Jack Henry Landry (170) and Juan Garcia (285).
Marblehead/Swampscott is set to wrestle at the NEC League Meet Sunday (8).
SWIMMING
Bishop Fenwick 88, Arlington Catholic 72
The Crusaders placed first in eight of 11 events to secure the win. Hannah Ryan, Hannah English and Audrey Waldinger were all double-winners for Fenwick, with Ryan winning the 100 breaststroke (1:20.28) and 500 freestyle (6:01.41), English winning the 100 butterfly (1:09.22) and the 200 freestyle (2:18.59) and Waldinger winning the 100 backstroke (1:05.87) and the 200 individual medley (2:32.72).
In the relay events, the team of Waldinger, Ryan, English and Madison Moseley won both the 200 medley relay (2:10.15) and the 400 freestyle relay (4:27.44).
St. Mary’s 88, East Boston 64
The Spartans got wins from Isabella Moriello in the 200 individual medley, Gaby Martins in the 100 backstroke and Dylan Obayashi in the 100 breaststroke. The team of Obayashi, Martins, Moriello and Joel Yanes took first place in the 200 medley relay.
