NAHANT — Students at Johnson Elementary School were treated to some outdoor Winter Olympics activities on Monday morning.
After seeing all the snow in town as well as a weather report that predicted it would be warmer later in the week, Principal Kevin Andrews wanted the children to be able to take advantage of the snow before it melts.
Students had the opportunity to bobsled down a hill behind the school, build snowmen and igloos in building stations, and participate in a torch relay.
“We encourage them to have fun at recess, but when they bring all that in here, I thought ‘hey, how can we make it something special,’ because this year we haven’t really had the types of events that bring everybody together (and) are super fun with COVID and all,” said Andrews. “We thought it was a safe way to get a lot of exercise and really take advantage of this beautiful property that we have.”
Stephanie Roush, a teacher at Johnson Elementary, said the students were excited to be outside and play with their classmates. Given that COVID-19 has made it difficult for children to play with one another, Roush said it meant a lot to give them this opportunity.
“It means everything; really giving them the chance to be maskless outside (and) enjoy fresh air. This is different from what we have been doing inside so it was a good idea to get out here,” she said.
Andrews said that considering the circumstances, it was special to give the kids this opportunity to play outside.
“It’s a bonding experience for the class and really it’s exercise. Most of the kids get a chance to be outside, but it gives them an extra opportunity on a day that might be a regular day to make it special,” said Andrews.
Andrews thanked the teachers for their cooperation in helping out with the event.
