School Sports Roundup: St. Mary’s boys basketball clinches CCL title

The St. Mary’s boys basketball team crossed another item off of its season-long checklist Tuesday night, clinching the Catholic Central League regular season title with a 77-47 victory over Cardinal Spellman at Tony Conigliaro Gymnasium.

The Spartans kept their record against Massachusetts teams unblemished, having only lost to First Baptist Academy of Naples, Fla. back on Dec. 18.

Ali Barry was the top scorer for St. Mary’s with 20 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Omri Merryman also had a big game with 15 points and seven rebounds.

St. Mary’s (16-1) plays on the road at Brockton Friday night (7).

BOYS BASKETBALL

St. John’s Prep 55, St. John’s (Shrewsbury) 44

The Eagles got themselves back to .500 on the season behind a 15-point effort from Jacob Mercedes. Stephon Patrick and Jack Perry each added nine points in the victory, while Jack Angelopolus notched seven points. 

St. John’s Prep (5-5) hosts BC High Friday (6:30).

Essex Tech 51, Lynn Tech 40

Ederick Gonzalez led the way with 11 points and 12 rebounds in the loss, while Mike Welch chipped in 13 points and three steals.

Tech (1-7) hosts Mystic Valley Friday (5:30).

Ipswich 61, Lynnfield 49

The Pioneers led by seven points early in the fourth quarter, but a huge run at the end of the game helped Ipswich steal the win.

Gavin Deluties hit six 3-pointers and scored 18 points to lead the way in the loss, while Zach Pincus added 12 points on four 3-pointers. Alex Fleming put up a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. 

Lynnfield (1-13) hosts North Reading Friday (7).

Lynn English 66, Somerville 48

Tyrese Melo Garcia continued his stellar season with 18 points and seven steals to lead the way, while Josh Anderson notched 12 points and seven rebounds. 

English (10-2) hosts Everett Thursday (7).

Everett 67, Lynn Classical 46

Jadden Gonzalez led the Rams with 15 points, while Marquese Avery was close behind with 13 points. 

Classical (5-7) hosts Malden Thursday (7).

Beverly 65, Salem 55

Darlin Santiago scored 15 points for the Witches, while Angel Tejada (10 points, seven rebounds) and Chris Qirjazi (10 points, six rebounds) also played well in the loss. 

Salem (10-3) plays on the road at Gloucester Friday (7).

Lowell Catholic 64, KIPP 54

The Panthers got 21 points and four assists from Vic Mafo, while Osaru Evbenaye chipped in 12 and six rebounds.

KIPP (3-6) travels to Greater Lawrence Friday (5:30).

Gloucester 60, Saugus 48

The Sachems got solid performances from Ryan Mabee (16 points), Jeury Barbosa (nine points) and Tyrone Manderson (eight points) in the loss. 

Saugus (6-6) travels to Masconomet Friday (7).

Masconomet 53, Winthrop 38

Winthrop (7-7) travels to Marblehead Friday (7).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

St. Mary’s 67, Cardinal Spellman 21

The Spartans put together an incredible 42-5 run in the second half to help secure the victory Monday night. 

Niya Morgen led the way for St. Mary’s with 21 points, while Yirsy Queliz was close behind with 19 points. 

St. Mary’s (16-2) is off until Saturday (5) when it hosts North Andover. 

Lynn English 80, Somerville 20

The Bulldogs qualified for the Division 1 state tournament with their 10th win of the season Monday.

Jari Perez had a big double-double with 15 points and 10 steals, while Rosie Chheang filled the stat sheet with 14 points, nine steals and seven assists. Jaeleigh Perry added 14 points and seven rebounds, Amara Flores had 11 points and five steals, Mackenzie Acevedo had nine points and five steals and Alisha Jean had seven points and eight rebounds. 

English (10-2) travels to Everett Thursday (7).

Lynn Classical 47, Everett 26

Ava Thurman led the offensive attack for Classical with 16 points, while Lauren Wilson and Molly Mannion each scored eight points in the win. Delaney Dana (five points) and Manuela Lizardo (three points) also played well for the Rams. 

Classical (11-3) travels to Malden Thursday (6).

Saugus 57, Gloucester 34

The Sachems were led by Peyton DiBiasio and Fallon Millerick, who each scored 14 points. Maddie Femino added seven points, while Cassie Israelson and Devany Millerick also had solid games.

Saugus (7-5) travels to Medford Wednesday (4:30).

Peabody 71, Swampscott 40

Emma Bloom was the Tanners’ top scorer with 16 points, while Logan Lomasney put up a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds in the win. Abby Bettencourt and Jess Richards each scored 10 points, while Taylor Bettencourt notched nine assists. Lauryn Mendonca and Gina Martinello also played well in the victory.

Peabody (11-2) travels to Danvers Friday (7).

Swampscott (7-4) hosts Manchester-Essex Thursday (7).

Lynn Tech 40, Greater Lawrence 15

The Tigers were led by Dayana Hios-Edwards, who finished with 13 points, six steals, five rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Nyari Lane-Benjamin added six points, five rebounds and four steals, while Lilly Cote scored nine points and Jayleen Novas put up four points, four rebounds and three assists. 

Tech (9-4) hosts Nashoba Thursday (4).

Marblehead 42, Danvers 31

The Magicians pulled off the win behind the play of their five seniors — Cat Candelaria, Ella Kramer, Annika Haley, Molly Cronin and Catherine Comstock. 

Marblehead (9-5) travels to Winthrop Friday (7).

Revere 50, Medford 45

Carolina Bettero had a massive game in the win for the Patriots, recording 30 points, eight rebounds and five steals.

Revere (8-5) plays on the road at Chelsea Thursday (4).

Lynnfield 31, Ipswich 28 (OT)

Isabella George led the way in the thrilling win for the Pioneers, putting up 15 points. Lucy Cleary scored four points and pulled down 17 rebounds, while Maggie Ozanian had seven points and six rebounds. Erika Pasquale added six rebounds and six steals. 

Lynnfield (5-8) plays on the road at North Reading Friday (6:30).

Masconomet 46, Winthrop 36

Winthrop (9-6) hosts Marblehead Friday (7).

BOYS HOCKEY

Newburyport 3, Bishop Fenwick 2

Fenwick (3-6-1) hosts Notre Dame (Conn.) Saturday (6). 

WRESTLING

St. John’s Prep 60, St. John’s (Shrewsbury) 9

The Eagles remained undefeated behind victories from Braedon Goes (106 pounds), Alex Schaeublin (113), Elias Hajali (120), Tyler Knox (126), Adam Schaeublin (132), Victor Mejias (138), Rawson Iwanicki (152), Ethan Barnes-Felix (160), Matt Mitchell (170) and Marc Pineiro (195). 

St. John’s Prep (30-0) travels to Catholic Memorial Wednesday (6).

SWIMMING

Marblehead 75, Salem 9

The Magicians remained undefeated on the season and clinched the Northeastern Conference title with the win Monday.

Cole Brooks was a double-winner for Marblehead after taking first place in the 100 backstroke (56.19) and the 200 freestyle (1:53). Also grabbing wins were Song Waitekus in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.20) and Clementine Robins in the 500 freestyle (5:24.30).
