WINTHROP — After trailing 3-1 early in the second period, the Bishop Fenwick boys hockey team notched five unanswered goals over the final 26 minutes of the game to take home a 6-3 win over Winthrop in a non-conference bout at Larsen Rink Thursday night.
Senior Mark Wilson led the way with two goals and one assist for the Crusaders, while senior Kevin Wood and junior Max Vieira each scored two goals. Senior Nick Wesley picked up one assist in the win.
For Winthrop, senior JD Parker, sophomore Robert Rich and freshman Phil Boncore each scored one goal.
After the two teams battled to a scoreless tie through the first nine minutes of play, Fenwick finally broke the stalemate when Wilson scored with 6:20 to play.
But Winthrop answered right back, scoring two goals in the final 1:45 of the period — one each from Boncore and Rich — to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
After Parker came out and scored less than five minutes into the second period, it looked like Winthrop might have a big night. But the Vikings went cold from there, allowing Fenwick to take over.
Just 15 seconds after Parker’s goal, Fenwick got one back on a goal from Wood. Three minutes after that, Vieira slammed home a rebound to tie things up at 3-3 going into the final period.
The two sides remained tied throughout most of the third period, but the Crusaders were able to notch the eventual game-winning goal when Wilson slipped a nifty pass across the ice to Vieira for a one-timer.
Wilson added an empty-net goal after that before Wood capped off the scoring with a goal in the final minute of play.
Winthrop (5-5-1) hosts Marblehead Saturday (1:30) back at Larsen Rink.
Fenwick (4-6-1) will host Notre Dame (Conn.) Saturday (6) at McVann-O’Keefe Memorial Rink.
