DANVERS — Essex North Shore Agricultural and Technical School has received an $80,000 grant to create a math-focused Acceleration Academy for around 80 students to partake in during the February and April school-vacation breaks.
This grant, given by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), will support expanded math education through engaging, hands-on learning experiences that are grade-specific.
Superintendent Heidi Riccio was pleased to announce the grant, saying it is “most welcome.”
“Math is a cornerstone skill in any career path,” Riccio said. “Essex Tech is committed to finding every academic resource for our students to increase their skills, so that they leave the school prepared.”
The classes will have between 10 to 12 students to allow instructors to create lessons to benefit individual-student needs.
Teachers will choose and invite students in grades 9 and 10 who need the support of additional math instruction to sign up.
If there are any openings remaining after this, the school can open registration to other grade 9 and 10 students regardless of their math level.
The students in the academy will receive four hours of math instruction and one hour of an enrichment-related activity each day.
Transportation, breakfast, and lunch are included.
