Grand scholarship offering in Saugus

SAUGUS – Saugus Action Volunteers for the Environment (SAVE) is offering a $1,000 Environmental Scholarship to residents graduating high school in 2022.

The scholarship is for students who will be attending a two-to-four-year college or other educational institution and are pursuing a degree in an area that would positively impact the environment. 2022 is also the first year that a $1,000 scholarship will be offered, as in past years the scholarship was for $500.

“SAVE’s mission has always been to promote a better quality of life in Saugus through environmental concern and action,” said SAVE President Ann Devlin. “As a nonprofit organization, we are grateful to be able to provide the annual environmental scholarship because we feel so strongly that careers which would positively impact the environment are so vitally important, especially in these climate times, and should be encouraged.”

Devlin is grateful to be able to work for SAVE and do her part to make the world a better place.

“As a former teacher, it is natural for me to continue to spread and promote awareness of the various issues which affect our environment and the numerous ways that we can work together to improve our health and the world around us,” she said.

SAVE was founded in 1973 when a group of concerned citizens met in the living room of late Town Meeting member Ellen Burns to fight the proposed 57-acre DeMatteo Dump expansion in East Saugus.

With COVID-19 affecting the organization’s ability to do public events, Devlin stated that SAVE is focusing on what it can do from home “through legislative involvement and through our involvement with the Alliance for Health and Environment.”

The organization’s priorities range from protecting wetlands to the control of signs and billboards. SAVE members have also helped establish curbside recycling in Saugus as well as conserving historic and environmentally-sensitive land on Vinegar Hill.

Applicants can download the SAVE 2022 Environmental Scholarship application form at www.saugusSAVE.org. The deadline to submit an application is April 22.
