PEABODY — The Peabody/Lynnfield girls hockey team secured a 2-1 win over Marblehead at home Wednesday night to improve its record to 13-3.
What started off and appeared to be a stalemate, the Tanners and the Magicians were scoreless after the first period. Both teams played very aggressive defense and didn’t give each other an inch to control the puck for more than a minute.
Near the final minutes of the first, Peabody goalie Audrey Buckley made an impressive save to kill some newfound momentum for Marblehead.
“Marblehead is a very, very hardworking team; they’re a well-coached team,” said Peabody/Lynnfield coach Brittany Smith. “We knew they were going to come ready to play. So we knew we just had to keep pressing.”
Going into the second period, the Magicians came out as the aggressors, but due to a couple of nice stops by Buckley, both teams went back to a stonewall performance. The Tanners eventually found their stride late in the second when Sarah Powers sailed the puck directly by Magicians’ goalie Lily Francouer with only 1:30 left on the clock for the first goal of the game.
The third period started off the same way as the second ended, with the Tanners playing very aggressively, keeping the Magicians on their heels. However, the Magicians were able to find their own rhythm and were able to maintain an offensive groove. Despite the Magicians’ aggression, the Tanners were able to move the puck out of their zone and extend their lead to 2-0 off of a goal by Penelope Spack.
The Magicians started to make their own magic late in the third when Sophie Zerilli scored their first goal, bringing the score to 2-1. However, this just wasn’t enough, as Buckley stopped the remaining shots on goal and secured the win for the Tanners.
