LYNN — The Lynn Classical girls basketball team closed out its 2021-22 regular season in style Saturday afternoon, picking up a 49-29 win over Swampscott in a non-conference battle at Lynn Classical High School.
“It was definitely a great way to end the regular season,” said Classical coach Tom Sawyer, who said he was happy with his team’s performance all season long. “We’ve worked hard to get to this point and we’ve reached a few of the goals that we’ve set for this season, so we’re in a good place. Now we’re looking forward to a few days of rest before we get back to it.”
The Rams were led by Ava Thurman in Saturday’s win, as the junior guard notched 17 points. Fellow junior guard Lauren Hennessey also had a solid day with 13 points.
Classical came out with a furious defensive effort to start the game, throwing Swampscott off balance from the beginning and establishing some momentum early. The Rams pulled ahead to a big 30-12 lead by halftime before coasting to victory in the second half.
“Our defensive play has really been solid, and our defense leads the way for us we’re tough to beat,” said Sawyer.
Classical closes the regular season at 16-4 and now has a week to prepare for the upcoming state tournament.
“It is what it is — we’re just going to approach this week like any other week,” said Sawyer. “We have a couple of scrimmages lined up to keep us busy and in game shape, and we’re just looking ahead to our seeding so we can prepare for our next opponent.”
