School Sports Roundup: Lynnfield hockey wins Martha’s Vineyard Tournament

The Lynnfield hockey team took a weekend-long trip out to Martha’s Vineyard and came home with some hardware, earning a clean sweep on the island to take the Fairleigh S. Dickinson Martha’s Vineyard Tournament championship. The Pioneers first beat Plymouth North 4-2 on Saturday in the opening round, then they took down host Martha’s Vineyard by the same score on Sunday to take home the trophy.

Lynnfield had four different scorers in Sunday’s title-clinching win, with Drew Damiani leading the way with one goal and one assist. Will Steadman, Aidan Burke and Janssen Sperling each scored one goal, while Chase Carney played the playmaker role with three assists. Jake Connell added one assist in the win. 

On Saturday, it was Carney who led the offensive attack after scoring two goals. Damiani and Steadman each found the back of the net once to round out the scoring. 

Lynnfield (16-2-0) closes out its regular season Wednesday evening (6) on the road at Gloucester.

BOYS HOCKEY

Bishop Fenwick 5, Lowell Catholic 1

The Crusaders celebrated their Senior Night with a big win at McVann-O’Keefe Memorial Rink. 

Chris Stevens scored two goals to lead the offensive charge for Fenwick, while Kevin Wood, Manny Alvarez-Segee and Max Vieira each scored one goal. 

Fenwick (6-9-4) closes out its season Wednesday (3) on the road at Lowell Catholic.

Danvers 5, Saugus 2

The Sachems got goals from Massey Ventre and Dante Mauro in the loss. 

Saugus (7-11-1) plays its final game of the season Wednesday (3:30) on the road at Winthrop.

Winthrop 6, Somerville 0

Winthrop (9-8-1) plays on the road at Cambridge Monday (4).

Gloucester 9, Swampscott 0

Swampscott (3-15-1) closes out the season Wednesday (7) on the road at Dover-Sherborn.

St. Joseph Prep 4, Lynn 3 (OT)

Lynn finishes the season at 3-17-0.

Marblehead 4, Beverly 1 (Saturday)

Ten different Headers earned a point in the victory, with Kyle Hart notching one goal and one assist to lead the way. Hayden Leveroni, Eli Feingold and James Caeran each had one goal, while goalie Nick Peters made 24 saves in net. 

Newburyport Bank Classic

Norwell 4, Marblehead 2 (Sunday)

Aidan Jalbert led the way with one goal and one assist in the loss, while Chris Locke scored one goal. Hogan Sedky, Aidan Ryan and Connor Jalbert each had one assist, while goalie Griffin Winter made 25 saves. 

Marblehead (8-8-2) takes on Newburyport OR Shrewsbury in the consolation game of the Newburyport Bank Classic Tuesday (TBD).

GIRLS HOCKEY

Peabody/Lynnfield 6, Medford/Malden 1

Behind a hat trick from Penelope Spack, the Tanners were able to notch a non-conference victory on the road. 

Catie Kampersal, Jenna DiNapoli and Ava Buckley each scored one goal in the win, while Hannah Gromko had a big day with three assists, while Ella Chase added two assists. 

Peabody/Lynnfield (14-3-1) takes on Bishop Fenwick in the annual Carlin Cup Monday morning (11).

Winthrop 6, Gloucester 0

Mia Norris had a hat trick in the victory for the Vikings, while Julia Holmes scored two goals and Mia Martucci scored one goal. Emma Holmes and Talia Martucci each had two assists, while goalie Summer Tallent picked up her 23rd career shutout and her 56th career win.

Winthrop (15-0-1) hosts Belmont Monday evening (5:10).

St. Mary’s 3, Pope Francis 0

After the two sides were deadlocked at 0-0 through two periods, the Spartans notched three goals in the final frame to pick up the win.

Amanda Forziati, Maggie Pierce and Kelly Lovett each found the back of the net once to lead the offense. 

St. Mary’s (12-5-3) takes on Notre Dame Hingham Monday (12) in the Hingham Hockey Showcase. 

Bishop Fenwick 3, Matignon 1

Lauren Diranian had two goals and one assist to lead the scoring attack for Fenwick, while Penny Levine added one goal. Lily Pregent notched two assists, while goalie Ella Tucker earned the win in net. 

Fenwick (7-8-2) takes on Peabody/Lynnfield in the annual Carlin Cup Monday morning (11).

Newburyport 3, Marblehead 1

The lone goal for the Magicians was scored by Ashley Piersol, while Hannah Tsouvalas had one assist. 

Marblehead (7-12-0) closes out its season Thursday morning (10:30) against Masconomet.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Spartan Classic

Lincoln-Sudbury 56, Lynn Classical 35

Jadden Gonzalez led the way for the Rams with 11 points, while Tyler Wilson notched eight points. 

Classical (7-13) will take on Lowell Catholic in the consolation round Monday (12).

Larry McIntire IAABO Board 130 Classic

Marblehead 69, Bishop Fenwick 66

Tyrone Countrymon scored 26 points to lead the offensive attack for the Magicians, who rallied from a halftime deficit to pick up the win. Kipp Schauder and Noah Mann each scored 12 points in the victory. 

Marblehead (11-7) will take on Gloucester in the Board 130 Classic championship game Monday (6).

The Crusaders were led by Mike Yentin, who dropped 30 points in the losing effort. 

Fenwick (9-9) will take on Masconomet in the consolation game Monday (2:30).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Spartan Classic

Lynn English 54, Acton-Boxboro 50

Jari Perez led the scoring attack for the Bulldogs with 14 points and three rebounds, while Makenzie Acevedo was close behind with 13 points and five rebounds. Matty Laurino had 10 points and seven rebounds, while Rosie Chheang had six points and three rebounds. Alisha Jean added 10 rebounds in the win. 

English (16-3) takes on Whitman-Hanson in the Division 1 championship Tuesday (3:30).

Larry McIntire IAABO Board 130 Classic

Bishop Fenwick 59, Fenway 13

Sophomore Cecilia Kay had a big game with 18 points, eight rebounds and five blocks, while senior captain Nasha Arnold and sophomore Ella Andrews each had nine points and seven rebounds. Senior captain Olivia Found had 10 assists in the win. 

Fenwick (15-6) takes on Peabody OR Marblehead in the Board 130 Classic championship game Monday (4:15).

Peabody 50, Marblehead 26

Abby Bettencourt scored 17 points to lead the way for the Tanners in the victory Sunday night. 

Peabody (17-2) takes on Bishop Fenwick in the Board 130 Classic championship game Monday (4:15). 

The Magicians were led by Molly Cronin’s nine points. 

Marblehead (11-8) takes on Fenway in the Board 130 Classic consolation game Monday (1).
