LYNN — A repeat as Spartan Classic champions is still in the cards for both the St. Mary’s boys and girls basketball teams, as each took home a win in their respective opening round games at the annual tournament held at Tony Conigliaro Gymnasium. The tournament made its return this year after being canceled last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The St. Mary’s boys went wild on the offensive end to crack the 100-point barrier and take home a 100-72 victory over Lowell Catholic, while the Spartan girls picked up a 64-24 win over Fontbonne on Senior Night.
In the boys game, which closed out the action on Saturday night, Ali Barry was the star of the show. The senior guard was red-hot from the field and dropped a career-high 40 points in just 24 minutes of playing time. Omri Merryman also had a big night with 16 points and five rebounds, while David Brown Jr. played well and finished with 11 points and five assists.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 22-1 on the year.
The girls closed out the second day of games with their win Sunday night, celebrating their Senior Night prior to the game. Despite having a largely young squad, the Spartans were able to honor seniors Olivia Abbott and Abby Constine for their contributions to the program over the past several years.
As for the game action, the Spartans got 19 points from Yirsy Queliz to pick up the victory on the court.
The victory puts St. Mary’s at 19-3 on the season.
The St. Mary’s boys will take on Lincoln-Sudbury in the Division 3 title game Monday night (7), while the St. Mary’s girls will go up against Pentucket in the Division 3 title game Tuesday night (7).
