School Sports Roundup: St. Mary’s boys hockey tops Central Catholic at Cardinal Classic

The St. Mary’s boys hockey team picked up a marquee win on the road at Olympia Ice Center Tuesday evening, taking down non-league opponent Central Catholic by a score of 2-1 in the opening round of the Cardinal Classic. 

“It was a great high-school hockey game between two evenly matched teams,” said St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee. “I was proud of the way our defensive core and our goaltending held up, and everybody chipped in.”

Brady Bullock and Jake Demariais each had one goal and one assist in the win for the Spartans, while Daniel Domeniconi added one assist. Goalie Owen Giangrande notched 15 saves to pick up the win in net.

St. Mary’s (10-7-4) takes on the winner of the Pope Francis-Catholic Memorial matchup in the championship game of the Cardinal Classic Wednesday (1) back at Olympia Ice Center.

Marblehead 11, Lowell 3

Marblehead wraps up the regular season at 9-8-2 and awaits its seeding in the state tournament.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Hingham Hockey Showcase

Notre Dame Hingham 2, St. Mary’s 0

The Spartans were deadlocked in a 0-0 tie through almost two full periods Tuesday, but a pair of late goals from the Cougars led to a loss for the visitors.

St. Mary’s (12-6-3) closes out its season Thursday afternoon (2) against Duxbury in the final round of the Hingham Hockey Showcase.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Salem 56, Peabody 50

The night belonged to Salem coach Tom Doyle, who picked up his 300th career victory with the win Tuesday.

Treston Abreu led the way for the Witches, putting up 23 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

Salem (16-3) closes out the regular season Wednesday night (7) at home against Salem Academy.

Anthony Forte led the Tanners with 12 points, while Shea Lynch (11 points, 10 rebounds) and Luke Roan (10 points, 12 rebounds) both had double-doubles in the loss.

Peabody wraps up the regular season at 13-7 and now waits to be seeded in the upcoming state tournament. 

Winthrop 65, Northeast 50

Winthrop wraps up the regular season at 8-12 and sits on the bubble in terms of making the state tournament.

General Patton Tournament

Consolation Game

Hamilton-Wenham 61, Revere 52

The Patriots were led by junior guard Domenic Boudreau’s 22 points and eight rebounds.

Revere (9-11) closes out the regular season with a home game against Lynn English Thursday (3).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Saugus 55, Swampscott 39

The Sachems were led by a stellar effort from Fallon Millerick, who finished with 18 points to lead all scorers. Peyton DiBiasio and Ashleen Escobar each added nine points in the victory.

Saugus finishes the regular season at 12-8 and awaits its seeding in the upcoming state tournament.

Swampscott closes the year at 8-11.

Winthrop 52, Northeast 44

Winthrop finishes the regular season at 15-6 and awaits its seeding in the upcoming state tournament.

Consolation Game

Lynnfield 42, Lowell Catholic 28

Maggie Ozanian led the way with 10 points and seven rebounds for the Pioneers, while Isabella George and Jaelynn Moon each scored eight points to aid in the victory. Lucy Cleary had a big all-around game with six points, 13 rebounds and six assists. 

Lynnfield finishes the season at 8-10 and hopes to grab a spot in the state tournament.
