The game will go down as a tie in the official record book, but the St. Mary’s boys hockey team battled through two overtime periods and a shootout to pick up a 3-2 victory over Pope Francis to bring home the Cardinal Classic championship Wednesday afternoon at Olympia Ice Center.

“You don’t win two games like this against quality opponents without everyone contributing, and that’s what we’ve gotten from our guys,” said St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee. “It was a tough battle (Wednesday), but our guys kept fighting and eventually came out on top.”

It was Christian Iacoviello who scored the game-winning goal in the shootout, while Cam McGonagle also scored in the shootout. Eric Toto and Brady Ayles each scored one goal in regulation, while forwards Jake Desmarais and Brady Bullock were both named to the All-Tournament Team. Goalie Owen Giangrande, who notched more than 30 saves over the two-day event, was named Tournament MVP.

St. Mary’s closes the regular season at 10-7-5 and awaits its seeding in the upcoming state tournament.

“We learned a lot about ourselves over the past few days, and we know that if we work hard then we’ll put ourselves in a position to win,” said Lee. “I imagine the confidence will be pretty high going into the tournament, but we know we have to keep working hard like we have all year if we want to go anywhere.”
