LYNN — The Marblehead girls hockey team put on an offensive clinic in its final regular season game Thursday morning, scoring early and often in a 7-3 victory over Masconomet in a Northeastern Hockey League matchup at Connery Rink.
The dominating victory came from a complete team effort led by Elsa Wood, who finished a six-point day with two goals and four assists. Hadley Wales and Ashley Piersol each scored two goals, while Ava Vautour added one goal.
The Magicians led the entire contest, and never looked back. It started with Wood’s early goal, and then it was off to the races. While the Chieftains were able to find some life on offense, it was in vain as the Magicians’ offensive magic continued throughout the game and just never eased up. This was on display in the final two minutes of the game when the Chieftains were able to score a late goal, but then the Magicians followed up with back-to-back goals, bringing the final score to 7-3.
“We played Masco earlier in the season and we let up and we didn’t play our game,” said Marblehead coach Brittany Smith. “I told the girls, ‘we need to pepper this goalie and get as many shots as possible and get the rebounds.’ It’s something we’ve struggled with all year, and I think today we finally put it all together.”
With the victory over the Chieftains, the Magicians moved to 8-12 overall on the year. Right now, it is up in the air if Marblehead will make it into the state tournament, but the results will be known this weekend when the tournament brackets are released.
