SkillsUSA gives thanks to Lynn teachers

LYNN — Students from Lynn Vocational Technical Institute’s SkillsUSA program spent their afternoon on Wednesday delivering thank-you bags to educators in the city.

This year’s theme for SkillsUSA is gratitude.

SkillsUSA advisor and Lynn Tech English teacher Jason McCuish said everyone is happy to be returning to some normalcy in life so the students wanted to thank the teachers for working hard throughout the pandemic and their online classes.

The students delivered drawstring bags that say “grateful to be an educator” on them, filled with popcorn, candy, and a card with a link to a personalized video.

“This went to all of the schools,” McCuish said. “We made over 2,000 of them.”

In January, SkillsUSA was supposed to host a free movie day for the teachers in the City Hall auditorium which got canceled because of the Omicron surge.

Instead of rescheduling to another time, the students pivoted and created their own video to give to the teachers.

Members of SkillsUSA spent time going around the city and interviewing other students, asking them why teachers are important and why they like their teachers.

They created a 15-minute video of these interviews, expressing gratitude towards teachers from students all around the district.

The students spent last weekend putting all of the bags together to be ready to surprise the teachers with them on Wednesday, which was a half day for the students so they could go around the city to hand deliver the bags themselves.

The video that the SkillsUSA students made can be found at https://vimeo.com/673727621.
