Lynn Elementary Basketball Tournament now in full swing

LYNN — Following a slew of play-in games over the past two weeks, the 44th annual Lynn Elementary Basketball Tournament began its elimination rounds Wednesday at Thurgood Marshall Middle School. 

First up was a Division 1 girls game, which pitted the No. 3 Cougars of Cobbet against the No. 6 Harrington Hornets. Cobbet took a slim two-point lead into the half and was able to hold on for the 15-12 victory. Si’Niyah Coates had six points and nine rebounds in the win for Cobbet, while Harrington’s Lianny Barahonna led all scorers with eight points. 

Cobbet will play No. 2 Ford next Wednesday (3:30).

The first boys game was a tightly contested Div. 1 matchup between No. 4 Ford and No. 5 Cobbet. The Cougars were able to pull off the upset, 11-4, behind six points from Kaleb Villanueva. Darby Pagoda was the high scorer for Ford. 

Cobbet will take on No. 1-seeded Hood on Saturday morning (11:10).

The other Div. 1 boys quarterfinal had No. 3 Ingalls taking on No. 6 Harrington with Ingalls advancing to the semifinal with a 26-5 victory. Reynold Em had another stellar game, scoring 14 for Ingalls. Brian Ailman and Jefry Delgado had a basket apiece for Harrington. 

Ingalls will play No. 2 Connery on Saturday morning (10).

In the day’s last game, No. 4 Callahan bested No. 5 Lincoln-Thomson by a score of 24-8. Devon Bercy (six points), Carmelo Torres (five points) and Daniel Mendez (five points) were the high scorers for Callahan. JJ Hernandez was Lincoln’s high scorer. 

Callahan will play No. 1 Aborn on Saturday (2:40).

The 44th annual Lynn Elementary Basketball Tournament resumes Friday with a full slate of girls games beginning at 3:30 p.m.
