Police seek help with Peabody shooting

March 24, 2022 by Alena Kuzub

PEABODY — The Massachusetts State Police is asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect in a shooting incident that took place on Wednesday evening on Route 1.

A 26-year-old woman was driving in a Mercedes sedan northbound on Route 1 in Peabody at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, when a gray Toyota SUV began tailgating her. The driver of the Toyota was driving aggressively and tried to pass the Mercedes, according to the police report.

When the Toyota came alongside the passenger side of the Mercedes, the operator of the Toyota shot at the Mercedes with a firearm, according to Dave Procopio, spokesperson for the Massachusetts State Police. The incident happened in the area of the Holiday Inn on Route 1 North.

The driver of the Mercedes was alone in the car and was not injured. The State Police was able to recover ballistics evidence from the scene and inside the Mercedes, Procopio said.

The State Police has issued a description of the shooter and another person who was with him in the Toyota and is seeking the public’s help in identifying them. The shooter was a Black man, approximately in his mid-20s, with a short, buzzed haircut. He was wearing a black shirt.

His passenger is believed to be a white woman, approximately in her mid-20s, with blonde hair.

The suspect vehicle had a Florida registration plate.

The Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services Section and Ballistics Unit and Peabody Police assisted troopers from the Danvers barracks on scene.

The State Police is asking anyone with information regarding the incident or the occupants of the Toyota to contact Trooper James Maloney of the State Police-Danvers barracks at 978-538-6161.
