Lynn Classical softball hoping for a big year under new coach

LYNN — New head coach Joe Morin and the Lynn Classical softball team are looking to take the Greater Boston League by storm this year.

Just like every other high-school team, Lynn Classical’s softball team missed out on just about two years of play. However, Morin is coming in for his first season with Classical, and with him he brings a full 20-game season.

“I’m definitely very excited,” said Morin. “We’ve got a lot of talent returning from years prior. I honestly think we’ve got an upper hand coming into this season. Our girls have been able to play year-round, whether it’s AAU ball or even a summer league.”

Morin and his staff are bringing a host of experience along with them. Between coaching and playing baseball throughout his high school and college career and coaching softball for the New England Storm for many years, Morin is bound to put together a talented team.

“The girls are definitely excited for the season,” said Morin. “Lynn Classical has been a strong program for a long time. We don’t want to just win the conference and then lose in the first round of the state tournament. I think these girls, who are multi-sport athletes after doing great in the division then losing early in the state tournament, I think they’re hungry for a deep state tournament run.”

One thing that Morin looks forward to the most is the development of his team. Between the returning seniors, who had three years under a different coach, and the freshmen who are going to be picking up a softball bat for the first time, Morin is excited to see how his coaching style meshes with these girls. He wants to see their growth from day one to the last day.

“Being a better team at the end of the season than at the beginning, that’s what I’d call a successful season,” said Morin about his expectations for the season. “I tell the girls on my team ‘every team wants to win a state title, but just because you don’t make it there doesn’t mean your season was a failure.’ If we ended better than where we started, that’s a success in my book.'”

Lynn Classical will host Revere for the first game of its season on April 4 (4).
