LYNN — The 44th annual Lynn Elementary Basketball Tournament closed out its semifinal round Friday evening at Marshall Middle School, with four matchups to decide the two championship games in Division 2.
On the girls side of things, the action started right away as No. 6 Brickett continued its Cinderella quest for its first-ever championship with a thrilling 7-6 victory over No. 2 Drewicz. Jenicy Vargas Martinez made the difference from Brickett, knocking down three free throws in the second half. Cassandra Miranda and Aaliyah Hardy were the top scorers in the loss for Drewicz.
The other Div. 2 girls game pitted No. 1 Shoemaker against No. 5 Sisson, with Shoemaker walking away with the 20-9 victory. Angelina Owumi led the way for Shoemaker with an impressive 12 points, while Arianna Karakoudas led the attack for Sisson with five points.
And with that, the Div. 2 girls championship is set for Saturday, when Shoemaker will face Brickett at 11:15 a.m. back at Marshall Middle School. Brickett will try to once again defy the odds and bring home the trophy for the underdogs.
The action then shifted to the boys side of the bracket, as No. 2 Brickett went up against No. 3 Shoemaker in a tight battle. After building up a bit of an early lead, Shoemaker was able to hang on and take home the 17-12 win. Jeremy Salvidar scored seven points in the victory, while Jacob Orival led Brickett in the loss with five points.
The final game of the evening saw one more upset play out, as No. 4 Washington pulled out its Cinderella shoes and knocked off No. 1 Drewicz by a score of 25-14. The second half was the difference in this one, as Washington outscored Drewicz 17-5 down the stretch to take home the upset win. Daymian Soto led Washington with 12 points, while Elian Rodriguez added eight points. Eric Romero led the way for Drewicz with seven points.
Washington will try to cap off its unexpected run on Saturday (3), when it goes up against Shoemaker.
Saturday’s championship day will have eight games scheduled at Marshall Middle School, with the action running from 10 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.
