MARBLEHEAD — Community organizer Terri Tauro has officially announced her candidacy for state representative of the 8th Essex District, which includes the towns of Marblehead and Swampscott, and parts of the city of Lynn.
“This is my community. I am a third-generation Marblehead resident and have spent my entire life in this town I love,” said Tauro. “I have raised my two daughters here, and hope to see my grandchildren raised here as well. I have a deep connection to this district and want to represent its residents and protect our natural resources fiercely.
“We deserve a leader who will advocate for the rights of working families, investment in green-energy sources with a just transition for workers, and high-quality public education.”
Tauro’s life experience and commitment to the district and its residents make her a worthy candidate.
Born as Theresa Colbert, Tauro attended the Marblehead Public Schools, where she was on the first-ever female youth soccer team in town. A hardworking single mother of two, at times she worked three jobs simultaneously to provide her children with the opportunities they deserved.
She has a vested interest in her lifelong home and has worked unremittingly for her neighbors. Tauro is a PowerUP leader, a North Shore working family ambassador, and a board member for the Marblehead Democratic Town Committee.
As president of the Marblehead Municipal Employees Union for many years, Tauro has advocated for the rights of workers and looked out for the interests of working families. She has consistently championed crucial issues on behalf of the people she represents, keeping vital concerns such as pay equity and workplace diversity at the forefront.
Tauro has successfully negotiated for contracts supportive of town employees. In the absence of a human-resources director in the municipality, Terri has made it her responsibility as MMEU president to monitor reports, remedy potentially unhealthy work environments, and respond to all inquiries from both union and non-union employees.
In Tauro’s role at the Marblehead Harbormaster’s office over the past 11 years, she has streamlined processes, worked to expedite the harbor waiting list, and helped ensure the safety of the community. When it comes to protecting the town’s coastline and pushing for green initiatives, she has firsthand experience with green boating, plastics recycling, and beginning the installation of municipal solar docks.
As a member of the executive board for the North Shore Labor Council (NSLC), Tauro has taken the opportunity to support working families of all backgrounds in the 8th Essex District. Through her work with the NSLC, she has become increasingly involved in the state legislative process and knows how to effectively push for change at a large scale.
Tauro is running as a Democrat.
