To the editor:
Two weeks ago, we were part of a group of more than 20 Lynn residents who attended a Zoning Board of Appeals hearing about plans for a new building on Farrar Street in Lynn.
We went to the meeting to say the developers should not be allowed to move forward with a project unless they commit to real public benefits.
We believe that means making at least 25 percent of the apartments truly affordable, working with neighbors on parking concerns, and ensuring the project creates good jobs with benefits for local people.
The group at the hearing included members of Lynn United for Change who live or work nearby; representatives of other community groups; and tenants of Sawyer Realty Partners apartments.
We all waited patiently for almost two hours until the Farrar Street project finally came up on the agenda only to see the hearing was postponed at the request of a city lawyer.
No one in the crowd was allowed a chance to say anything. We do not understand why the city lawyer could not have raised the request of the legal department earlier.
We are also very disappointed that the meeting was not translated into Spanish. Many people in the crowd spoke Spanish and limited or no English.
