After scoring more points than anyone else in the Item’s coverage area this winter, Lynnfield senior captain Chase Carney has been selected as the 2021-22 Item Player of the Year for boys hockey.

Carney — the captain and first-line center on this year’s Lynnfield team — had a massive season on the offensive end for the Pioneers, leading the team in goals with 32 and adding 31 assists for a whopping 63 points in just 24 games. He helped lead Lynnfield to the Division 3 state semifinal game, coming up just two wins short of a state title. He was also named Cape Ann League co-MVP alongside teammate Drew Damiani.

Joining Carney as Item All-Stars for the 2021-22 boys hockey season are Tommy Sarni (St. John’s Prep senior), Will Van Sicklin (St. John’s Prep senior), Payton Palladino (St. John’s Prep senior), Drew Damiani (Lynnfield senior), Aidan Burke (Lynnfield senior), Jake Desmarais (St. Mary’s senior), Brady Bullock (St. Mary’s junior), Owen Giangrande (St. Mary’s senior), Daniel Domeniconi (St. Mary’s sophomore), Connor Jalbert (Marblehead junior), Devin Copithorne (Lynn senior), Jason Bouffard (Swampscott sophomore), Dillon Bloom (Bishop Fenwick senior), Peter Silverman (Winthrop sophomore), JD Parker (Winthrop senior), Massey Ventre (Saugus senior) and Chris Regnetta (Saugus senior).

Sarni, a Lynnfield native, led the way in the scoring department for Division 1 champion St. John’s Prep this season, finishing the year with a team-high 21 goals to go along with nine assists. Van Sicklin, also from Lynnfield, wasn’t that far behind with 27 total points, scoring 12 goals and adding 15 assists. Palladino was a rock in net all year for the Eagles, putting up a goals-against average of 1.62 and a save percentage of .914 while recording five shutouts. He finishes his career with a 20-2-0 record in net.

Damiani played the role of the quintessential offensive defenseman for the Pioneers this season, earning CAL co-MVP honors alongside Carney after finishing the year with 18 goals and a team-high 32 assists for 50 total points. Burke, who played right wing next to Carney all season along, notched 15 goals and 28 assists for 43 total points.

Desmarais, who also earned the Boston Bruins-MIAA Sportsmanship Award for the CCL Large this year, led the Spartans in points this winter with 24 (eight goals, 16 assists). Bullock, a senior from Lynn, led the team with 14 goals and added eight assists, while Domeniconi took a big step forward in his sophomore year with nine goals and 11 assists. Giangrande, a Marblehead native, played a huge number of minutes in net, notching a goals-against average of 1.88.

Jalbert was one of the top assist men in the area this winter, notching 27 of them to go along with 16 goals. His 43 total points put him among the top five in the Item’s coverage area.

Copithorne was the top point-getter for the Jets, finishing the season with eight goals and 14 assists for 22 total points.

Bouffard, in his second season starting between the pipes, made 480 total saves for the Big Blue.

Bloom capped his Crusaders career with yet another solid season in net, putting up a save percentage of .896 and a goals-against average of 2.31. He made 277 total saves on the year.

The Sachems saw two players hit the 30-point mark on the year, with Ventre leading the team in goals (17) and Regnetta leading the team in assists (20).

Silverman made a splash in his sophomore season with the Vikings, leading the team in assists (23) and total points (43) while finishing second in goals (16). Parker was the top goal scorer with 22 tallies, while adding 10 assists for a total of 32 points.

Other local hockey players who earned all-star honorable mention status are Jaylen Porter, Sean Leonard and Stevan Downey (Lynn); Eric Toto, Cam McGonagle, Jack Carpenter and Seamus Foley (St. Mary’s); Manny Alvarez-Segee, Max Vieira, Nick Wesley and Mark Wilson (Bishop Fenwick); Jake Vana, Pierce Blaeser, Cole Blaeser and Theo Vetere (St. John’s Prep); Phineas Mitchener, Will Steadman, Janssen Sperling and Tyler Scoppettuolo (Lynnfield); Eli Feingold, Aidan Ryan, Hayden Leveroni, Christopher Locke and Carter Laramie (Marblehead); Jason Caron and Ryan Ragucci (Saugus); Max Gadon, Zack Pierce and Quinn Hitchcock (Swampscott); and Jack Hayes, Joe Hayes and Ari Hain (Winthrop).
