LYNN — Parents of Lynn Public Schools (LPS) students are hosting the first citywide Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) conference on Sunday, April 3 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Demakes Family YMCA.
This free event — organized by LPS parents Amy Butterworth and Sandy Anshewitz — will touch upon a variety of topics and feature discussions from city leaders and officials.
Discussion topics include why having a PTO matters; what the School Committee is; the importance of bilingual inclusion; creative ways to meet fundraising goals; and embracing diversity.
“This started as a way to connect Lynn Public Schools parent-teacher organizations to share ideas and growth strategies,” Butterworth said. “As we began to spread the word about the event, we quickly learned there was an even bigger need beyond just current PTO members. Many parents are seeking to form solid relationships with other families, to meet the leaders in our school community, and to come together to enhance our children’s educational experiences.”
The conference will feature Mayor Jared Nicholson; former School Committee member Michael Satterwhite; community advocate Tia Cole; School Committee member Tiffany Magnolia; the city’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer Faustina Cuevas; and LPS teacher and college professor Magalie Rowe.
This event is open to all parents but geared towards members of LPS PTO groups.
“The goal is to help facilitate a tighter network of PTO groups within our Lynn public school community to strengthen and empower each other for the benefit of all our city’s children,” Anshewitz said. “To help empower all parents with children enrolled in Lynn Public Schools with the information and resources needed to be better advocates for our children, while also working together to enhance the community-school experience for everyone.”

“We are really excited to bring people together, and see this as a jumping-off point for even greater things,” Butterworth said.
Butterworth extended a thank you to School Committee member Lennin Pena for securing the community room at the Y for the conference.
