Nahant Village Church ringing its bells for climate change

NAHANT — The Nahant Village Church is ringing its bells 11 times on the 11th of each month at 11 a.m. to call attention to the need to take action on the climate crisis.

Nahant Village Church is joining several other churches in the state this month on this initiative.

“We joined because we care deeply about our environment,” said Nahant Village Church member Marrit Hastings. “We feel that it is the 11th hour in terms of the environment and that action is urgently needed.”

The First Parish in Cambridge and Old Cambridge Baptist Church began a similar initiative earlier in the year, which inspired the Interfaith Climate Justice Group of the Cape Ann Climate Coalition and the NorthShore Sustainability Network to take action.

This initiative was brought to the attention of the Nahant Village Church by Safer Waters in Massachusetts (SWIM), which encouraged the church to join in on the movement in the month of April.

“We will continue to ring our bells into the immediate future,” Hastings said. “The bell ringing hopefully will serve as a reminder for people to act.”

Other participants include the Annisquam Village Church, Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church, First Congregational Church of Rockport, Unitarian Universalist Society of Rockport, and Saint Peters-San Pedro in Salem.

Organizers of this initiative hope it will continue to expand and reach from Cambridge to Cape Ann and beyond.
