Thanks in part to an 11-run outburst in the bottom of the second inning, the Marblehead baseball team picked up its first win of the season by taking down Winthrop, 17-5, in a five-inning game at Seaside Park Thursday afternoon.
A host of Magicians hitters led the attack, with Liam McIlroy (2-for-4, triple), Schuyler Schmitt (2-for-4, double) and Craig Michalowski (2-for-2, double) each recording three RBI. James Doody went 1-for-4 with one RBI, while Shane Keough went 1-for-3 with one RBI.
On the mound, it was Ian Maude who picked up the win after tossing four innings and allowing five runs on four hits with four strikeouts. Cody Selvais pitched one inning of relief and struck out two batters.
Marblehead (1-2) plays on the road at Manchester-Essex Monday (4).
Joe Ferullo (1-for-1) and Evan Rockerfeller (1-for-2) each had one RBI in the loss for the Vikings, while Colin Kinsella and Zach Bogusz each had a double.
Winthrop (1-1) hosts Snowden Saturday morning (11).
BASEBALL
Lynn Classical 5, Medford 0
Kyle Durant led the way for the Rams on both sides of the field, pitching a complete-game one-hitter with eight strikeouts on the mound and also knocking in two RBI at the plate.
Almani Medina, Christian Spates, Knico Ramirez, Ethan Chevalier and Juniel Guzman each scored a run in the victory.
Classical (2-0) plays on the road at Lynnfield in a non-league game Saturday morning (10).
Peabody 4, Newton North 3
The Tanners jumped ahead in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a two-run single from Giovanni Guglielmo and never surrendered the lead again. Brendan Smith was responsible for the other two Peabody runs, smashing a two-run homer.
On the mound, it was Justin Powers who earned the win after tossing six innings and striking out nine batters. Sophomore Brendan Waite pitched the final inning to earn his first career save.
Peabody (2-0) is now off until Wednesday (4) when it plays on the road at Beverly.
St. John’s Prep 8, Lawrence 7
Dylan Wodarski hit into a walk-off fielder’s choice to drive in the winning run at Pete Frates Field Thursday.
Aidan Driscoll led the offense for the Eagles, going 3-for-3 with two RBI. Kyle Webster went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and two RBI, while Nick Solitro went 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI.
Connor Remley earned the win in relief for the Prep after tossing 1 2/3 innings and striking out three batters. Cam Wodarski got the start and went the first four innings with four strikeouts, while Webster picked 1 1/3 innings and struck out four.
St. John’s Prep (2-1) travels to St. John’s (Shrewsbury) Monday (4).
SOFTBALL
Beverly 14, Marblehead 2 (F/6)
Junior Nikki Erricola led the offense for Beverly, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Noelle McLane earned the win on the mound and drove in two runs at the plate, while Lindsey Gannon went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Grace Coughlin earned her first career hit and first career RBI in the win.
Beverly (1-0) hosts Swampscott Wednesday (4).
Marblehead (0-2) hosts Hamilton-Wenham Tuesday (4).
BOYS LACROSSE
Lynnfield 12, North Reading 1
Aside from the strong team defensive performance by the Pioneers, Drew Damiani led the offensive attack with six goals and one assist. Freshmen Owen Considine and Kelan Cardinal each scored their first career varsity goals in the win, while freshman goalie Ben Pimental earned his first career win in net.
Lynnfield (1-0) travels to Triton Monday (5).
GIRLS LACROSSE
Beverly 14, Marblehead 8
Gigi Lombardi led the way for the Magicians with three goals and one assist, while Hadley Wales was close behind with three goals. Lucy Wales and Ramona Gillet each scored one goal, while Molly Cronin had two assists. Goalie Katie Santeusanio made 18 saves in the loss.
“We played a strong game against a competitive and well coached Beverly team,” said Marblehead coach Annie Madden. “Our defense is coming together as a unit, our offense is finishing, and we are taking each game and learning every day.”

Brookline 5, Marblehead 0
The Magicians had a tough time against Division 1 powerhouse Brookline, with Mika Garber, Guillermo Jimenez-Herreria, Aidan Ryan and the team of Jack Donovan and Dwight Foster only winning one game each in their respective matches.

GIRLS TENNIS
St. Mary’s 3, Cardinal Spellman 2
After Taylor Picardi picked up a win in singles, the Spartans swept the doubles matches with wins from the team of Ana Parisi and Kate Miller and the team of Ana Silveira and Anna Wood to secure the victory.
St. Mary’s (1-0) travels to Matignon Friday (3:30).
Medford 3, Lynn Classical 2
The Rams picked up two singles wins in the loss Thursday, with Alyssa Raithel taking second singles (6-4, 6-2) and Linda Jallow winning third singles (6-0, 6-0).
Classical (1-1) hosts Everett Monday (4).

Lynn Tech 97, Notre Dame 12
The Tigers got first-place finishes from Jeph Onyighrchi in both the 100 hurdles and the triple jump, Franklin Rodriguez in both the 800 and the one-mile, Randy Martinez in the 400 hurdles, Alan Barrios in the two-mile, Remy Chiep in the 400, Kyle Lindquist in the javelin, Tyler David in the shot put, Joshua Louis in the discus and Ceaser Reyes in the high jump. In the relay events, the team of Long, Martinez, Andrew Pao and Ryan Mendez won the 4×100 relay and the team of Brian Zarate, Bryton Osgood, Solomon Alba and Diego Castro won the 4×400 relay.
Tech (1-0) travels to Innovation Wednesday (4).

Winners for the Tigers were Skyla McGough in both the 100 hurdles and the high jump, Miyoka Johnson in both the 200 and the long jump, Amaya Williams in the 100, Briana Anderson in the one-mile, Kassandra Pena in the 400, Angelina Castillo in the shot put, Maria Groscos in the discus and Felicity Blaney in the triple jump. In the relay events, the team of Williams, McGough, Johnson and Nyari Lane-Benjamin won the 4×100 relay and the team of Anderson, Pena, Groscos and Amber Rodriguez won the 4×400 relay.
