School Sports Roundup: Lily Newhall, St. Mary’s softball roll to victory

St. Mary’s pitcher Lily Newhall continued her dominant start to the season Friday afternoon, as the senior ace pitched a complete-game shutout to help lift the Spartans softball team to a 3-0 victory over Austin Prep on the road. Newhall allowed just five hits and struck out 17 batters in the victory. 

She also got the job done with the bat by going 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Emely Rodriguez went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Ashanthy Pardilla went 1-for-3 with an RBI. 

St. Mary’s (3-0) hosts Arlington Catholic Monday (3:30).

SOFTBALL

Peabody 5, Gloucester 3

Thanks to some heads-up baserunning in the late innings, the Tanners were able to come from behind to take home the win Friday. 

Isabel Bettencourt and Abby Bettencourt each had an RBI double in the win, while Emma Bloom also knocked an RBI single. 

Peabody (2-1) hosts Salem Wednesday (4).

Bishop Fenwick 4, Arlington Catholic 1

Fenwick (1-1) hosts Austin Prep Monday (3:30).

BOYS LACROSSE

Austin Prep 6, St. Mary’s 3

The Spartans got goals from Seamus Foley, Sam York and Joey Calder in the loss. 

St. Mary’s (1-3) plays on the road at Arlington Catholic Monday (4).

Bishop Fenwick 11, Arlington Catholic 8

The Crusaders were led by a three-goal, two-assist effort from Manny Alvarez-Segee in the victory, while Tyler Mullen added three goals and one assist. Anthony Sasso had two goals and one assist, while Kevin Wood and Nick Wesley played well defensively. Goalie Will Gibbs picked up 10 saves in the winning effort. 

Fenwick (2-1) travels to Austin Prep Monday (5:30).

Malden 10, Salem 1

Michael Curtin scored his first career varsity goal for the Witches, while Javon Beaver played well defensively and goalie Maher Kokonezis made 18 saves in net. 

Salem (0-3) travels to Saugus Monday (4:30).

GIRLS LACROSSE

Austin Prep 15, St. Mary’s 4

Jill Kirby and Molly Cummings each had one goal and one assist in the losing effort for the Spartans, while Kasey Litwin and Hannah Coleman each scored one goal. Goalie Payton Quirk came up with 10 saves.

St. Mary’s (0-2) hosts Arlington Catholic Monday (5).

Salem 18, Malden 7

Breanna Stead netted nine goals to lead the Witches to their first win in three years. Sierra Clawson added five goals for Salem, while Mei-Li Hannig and Grace Milano each scored two goals. Goalie Arrene Kenney made five saves. 

Salem (1-1) has more than a week off before traveling to Danvers next Saturday (10).

BOYS TENNIS

Marblehead 5, Masconomet 0

The Magicians bounced back in a big way after a tough loss Thursday, sweeping all five matches on the road Friday.

In singles play, wins came from Mika Garber (6-4, 7-5), Guillermo Jimenez-Herreria (6-1, 6-2) and Aidan Ryan (6-4, 7-5). 

In doubles, the team of Jack Donovan and Dwight Foster battled to win their match 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 and the team of Ethan Farfel and Jayden Janock won their varsity debut match 6-3, 6-4. 

Marblehead (1-1) is now off until Thursday (4) when it plays on the road at Danvers.

GIRLS TENNIS

Lynnfield 4, North Andover 1

The Pioneers swept singles play en route to the victory, getting victories from Paige Martino (6-1, 6-1), Anna Radulski (6-2, 6-3) and Genna Gioioso (6-1, 7-6). 

Also winning for Lynnfield was the doubles team of Lauren Grava and Maddie Sieve, who had to fight hard to pull out a 6-7, 7-6, 10-7 victory in a super tiebreaker. 

Lynnfield (2-0) hosts Bishop Fenwick Monday (3:30).

Hamilton-Wenham 5, Swampscott 0

The closest match of the day for the Big Blue came in first doubles, where the team of Meggie Jensen and Anastasia Shub fell by set scores of 6-4, 6-1. 

Swampscott (0-2) hosts Saugus Monday (4:30).
