LYNNFIELD — The Lynn Classical baseball team marched onto the Lynnfield Pioneers’ diamond and took home the hard-fought road win on Saturday afternoon, winning by a score of 6-2 in the less-than-favorable conditions.
“I think we really had a solid game, especially against Lynnfield who is very mechanically sound,” said Classical coach Mike Zukowski. “We got our bats on the balls and we scored some runs, but I think we need to be better defensively and not give up those easy runs on the other side.”
Tyler Wilson led the offense for Rams, going 3-for-4 with three base hits and two RBI. Kyle Durant went 1-for-4 with a single, while Brady Warren went 1-for-3 with a single and a walk.
Nick Razzaboni was a big factor in the Pioneers’ offense, going 1-for-2 with a single and two walks. Alex Gentile went 2-for-4 with two singles.
“The errors killed us today, and we really need to tighten that up,” said Lynnfield coach John O’Brien. “I think we were fine getting our bats on the ball, but their guys were just in position to make plays when they needed to.”
For a majority of the contest, both teams battled back and forth — struggling to gain any momentum. During the first and second innings, the Pioneers were able to grab an early two-run lead behind a few defensive errors by the Rams.
However, Classical wasn’t going down without a fight. Behind a handful of walks, the Rams were able to bring two runs across the plate to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the third inning.
The momentum didn’t stop there for Classical. After their big third inning, the Rams drove in three more runs thanks to singles from Christian Figueroa, Durant and Wilson. Wilson’s single up the middle sent home Durant and Figueroa at once, giving the Rams a two-run lead in the fourth.
Classical never looked back.
Both coaches commended their pitchers’, as their prowess on the mound certainly did not reflect the scores of the game. John DiSaia started for the Rams on the bump and went 5 1/3 innings to earn the win, while Kevin Whalen came on to get the final five outs.
“This might have been DiSaia’s first varsity start,” said Zukowski. “I think he played very well and he really stepped up big in the moments, especially when he found himself in a hole.”
Tim Pivero took the starting job for the Pioneers and pitched well despite taking the loss.
“Our pitcher played well outside of a few walks in the third,” said O’Brien. “But this is a team effort, and giving up errors and easy runs is the kiss of death.”
Lynnfield (0-1) faces off against Haverhill at home on Tuesday (4).
Classical (3-0) plays at Fraser Field against Everett on Monday (4).
