The Swampscott baseball team jumped out to a six-run lead in the first inning and never looked back Saturday afternoon, riding a complete-game effort from starter John Cuttle to take home a 9-0 win over Salem in a Northeastern Conference bout at Forest Ave. Park.
Cuttle dazzled on the mound, needing just 89 pitches to move through the order. He allowed three hits and two walks while striking out 13 batters. Nearly 75 percent of his pitches were strikes.
On the offensive side of things, Jonah Cadorette led the way by going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Harry Riddell added two hits and two RBI in the victory, while Matt Schroeder had two hits and one RBI.
Swampscott (2-0) hosts Revere Tuesday evening (5) at Forest Ave. Park.
The lone hits for the Witches came from Rocco Ryan (1-for-3), Eros Fernandez (1-for-2) and Jon Wasserman (1-for-3). Each of them also had a stolen base in the loss.
Salem (0-2) travels to Masconomet Wednesday (4).
BASEBALL
Winthrop 14, Snowden 0 (F/5)
Phil Boncore had a massive day on the offensive end for the Vikings, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and also adding three stolen bases. Matt Decarney went 1-for-1 with an RBI in the win, while Pete Silverman (1-for-2), Ryan Gagnon (1-for-4) and Joe Ferullo (1-for-2) each added a hit.
Winthrop (2-1) travels to Saugus Wednesday (4).
Danvers 2, Saugus 0
Thanks in part to a stellar complete-game shutout on the mound from Danvers’ Mike Moroney, the Falcons pulled out the close win at Twi Field Sunday afternoon.
Moroney only allowed two hits in the victory, walking two batters and striking out seven.
On offense for the Falcons, Evan Currie went 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the way.
Danvers (3-0) hosts Marblehead Tuesday (4).
The lone hits for the Sachems came from Cam Soroko and Michael Howard. Nathan Ing had a solid day on the mound despite taking the loss, tossing six innings and allowing two runs on four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.
Saugus (2-1) travels to Ipswich Monday (4:30).
GIRLS LACROSSE
St. Mary’s 14, Matignon 3
Molly Cummings scored four goals to pace the offensive attack in the Spartans’ first win of the season, while Kasey Litwin added three goals of her own. Jill Kirby and Ava Nason each scored two goals, while goalie Payton Quirk had a solid game in net to help secure the victory.
St. Mary’s (1-2) hosts Arlington Catholic Monday (5).
