Letter: An Earth Day message from the Swampscott Conservancy

The Editors

April 11, 2022 by The Editors

To the editor:

Traveling at a speed of 66,616 mph, our planet has completed its yearly orbit around the sun and brought us back once again to April 22 and another Earth Day.

First celebrated in the U.S. in 1970, Earth Day is a day for both fostering an appreciation of the planet we live on and raising an awareness of the issues that threaten it.

EARTHDAY.ORG, the global organizer of Earth Day has announced that the theme for Earth Day 2022 will be “Invest in Our Planet.”

To quote the organizer, it means focusing on accelerating solutions to combat our greatest threat, climate change, and “to activate everyone — governments, citizens, and businesses — to do their part.

But, really, what can we, either as individuals or even in small groups, do?

According to the organizer of this year’s Earth Day, “A Billion Acts of Green” will be happening across the planet, from students and community organizers, to government officials seeking ways to make a difference.

We can start small and go big — or start big and stay big. Either way, keep coming back, keep taking action and join the movement to change the world.

This Earth Day offers us all an opportunity to join a movement, to be a part of that Billion Acts of Green.
