Saugus softball comes up short against Wakefield

SAUGUS — The Saugus softball team played a back-and-forth game against Wakefield Monday afternoon, but in the end the Sachems didn’t quite have enough firepower and fell to the Warriors by a score of 14-7 at Parcher Field.

“It’s always nice to take on non-conference opponents and give the girls an idea of other strong teams in the area who will prepare them for the tournament,” said Saugus coach Steve Almquist. “We know the Middlesex League (where Wakefield plays) is a strong league and Wakefield has some great players.”

Fallon Millerick had a big game on both sides of the field despite the loss. On offense she went 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBI, while she pitched all seven innings in the circle for the Sachems.

Elsewhere for Saugus, Devany Millerick went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Ava Rogers went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Felicia Reppucci also had a solid game, going 2-for-5.

The Sachems got off to a great start by jumping ahead 2-0 in the early innings, but Wakefield battled back with four runs of its own to go ahead 4-2.

The two sides continued to battle back and forth from there, and as the teams headed into the sixth inning the score was 8-7 Warriors. But that’s where things went wrong for the Sachems, as Wakefield was able to score three runs in the sixth and tack on three extra insurance runs in the seventh to pull away for the victory.

“They were just able to pull away at the end there,” said Almquist. “We’re still a young team and we’re learning, and some defensive errors out there led to runs so we’ve got to clean that up. But we’ve got a long way to go this year.”

Saugus (1-1) goes on the road for a tough matchup against Gloucester on Wednesday (4).

“It’s always tough making the trip up there and playing them, and we know they’re a tough team again this year,” said Almquist. “We’ve always played them tough, but we haven’t seemed to be able to pull out a win. We’re going to take some positives from this game (Monday) and try to be even better when we take the field Wednesday.”
