School Sports Roundup: Lily Newhall throws perfect game for St. Mary’s softball

The legend of St. Mary’s softball pitcher Lily Newhall continues to grow, as the senior ace dominated on the mound once again by throwing a perfect game in a 6-0 win over Arlington Catholic Monday afternoon. 

Newhall struck out eight batters in the perfect victory.

On the offensive side of things for the Spartans, Ashanthy Pardilla had two hits and two RBI to lead the way. Brooke Moloney had three hits and one RBI, while Michaela Walker notched two hits and scored two runs. 

St. Mary’s (4-0) hosts Bishop Feehan Wednesday (3:30).

SOFTBALL 

Lynn Classical 8, Everett 1

Izzy Faessler and Manuela Lizardo led the offensive charge for the Rams, as Faessler went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI and Lizardo went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Rachel Dana went 2-for-3 with one RBI and also pitched two innings of relief, while MeKayla Poisson went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and also earned the win on the mound after striking out three batters in five innings of work. 

Classical (2-1) is right back in action Tuesday afternoon (4) with a road game against Medford. 

Austin Prep 8, Bishop Fenwick 0

Austin Prep may have dominated during the game, however Gigi Aupoint went seven innings pitched, allowing seven hits with 13 strikeouts. The offense may have been underwhelming, but Arianna Costelllo went 2-for-3, accounting for two of the team’s three total hits.

Fenwick (1-2) is back in action on Wednesday (3:30) at home against Bishop Stang.

BASEBALL

St. Mary’s 14, Arlington Catholic 3 (F/5) 

It was a massive day at the plate for Jason Donohue, who went 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. 

John Nowicki went 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored to help the offense, while pitcher Eric Bridges earned the win on the mound after tossing five innings and allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts. 

St. Mary’s (3-1) travels to Bishop Feehan Wednesday (3:30).

Lynn Classical 11, Everett 1 (F/5)

Shortstop Brady Warren went 2-for-3 with two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the way for Classical, while Almani Medina went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Kyle Durant, Christian Spates and Juniel Guzman each had one RBI in the win, while Christian Figueroa had a single and scored twice. Jon Baker earned his first career varsity start and added two RBI at the plate, while Tyler Wilson earned the victory on the mound.

Classical (4-0) travels to Malden Wednesday (4).

St. John’s Prep 6, St. John’s 1

Aidan Driscoll, Cam LaGrassa, Victor Harrington and Tucker Larson each had one RBI in the win for the Eagles. On the mound, Joe Williams earned the win after tossing five innings and allowing one run on one hit with five strikeouts. Connor Remley tossed two hitless innings of relief. 

St. John’s Prep (3-1) hosts Xaverian Wednesday (4).

Saugus 12, Ipswich 2

Saugus took home the victory when the team stepped up late in the contest to break the 2-2 tie. Ryan Mabee started on the bump for Saugus, pitching six innings and allowing four hits and two runs while striking out three. Anthoney Macone went 4-for-4 to help give Saugus the victory in the contest. Six of the Sachems’ runs came during the final inning of the game. 

Saugus (3-1) hosts Winthrop Wednesday (4).

Revere 5, Medford 4 

Revere won a hard fought game behind Kyle Cummings 5 1/3 innings pitched and two earned runs, while striking out eight batters. 

The Patriots’ go-ahead run came on a wild pitch from Medford before Mikey Popp struck out the side in the seventh inning to give Revere the win. Andrew Leone grabbed a single to drive in an RBI to tie the game in the fifth inning. 

Revere (2-1) is on the road in Chelsea on Wednesday (4).

BOYS LACROSSE 

Arlington Catholic 8, St. Mary’s 7 (OT)

Joey Calder scored four goals in the losing effort for the Spartans.

St. Mary’s (1-4) travels to Bishop Feehan Wednesday (5).

Triton 12, Lynnfield 9

Jack Calichman led the Pioneers with two goals and one assist, while Owen Considine and Drew Damiani each scored two goals. Will Steadman had one goal and three assists, while Kelan Cardinal and Will Norton each scored one goal — with Norton’s coming as the first of his varsity career.

Lynnfield (1-1) travels to Amesbury Thursday (4).
GIRLS LACROSSE

Arlington Catholic 16, St. Mary’s 10

Despite the loss, the Spartans got great performances from Ava Nason (four goals) and Jill Kirby (two goals). 

St. Mary’s (1-3) hosts Bishop Feehan Wednesday night (7).

Salem 6, Saugus 5

Salem captain Mei-Li Hannig scored three goals to help propel the Witches to victory, while goalie Arrene Kenney made a number of critical saves down the stretch. 

Salem (2-1) travels to Marblehead Thursday (4).

BOYS TENNIS

Lynn Classical 5, Everett 0

The Rams swept their matches on the day, getting singles wins from Wilson Lieu (6-0, 6-1), Sammi Motassim (6-0, 6-0) and Jimmy Phan (6-1, 6-2) and doubles wins from the team of Marcus Ryan and Miseeal Beato (6-0, 6-0) and the team of Andrew Jallow and Qasim Isam (6-1, 6-2). 

Classical (1-1) travels to Medford Wednesday (4).

St. Mary’s 4, Bishop Fenwick 1

The Spartans earned two doubles wins to come away with the match victory Monday. 

Singles wins came from Aiden Sullivan (4-6, 6-4, 10-5) and Connor Hamel (6-1, 6-1), while the doubles wins came courtesy of the team of Dion Sacca and Tom Shae (6-3, 6-2) and the team of Griffin L’Italien and Dan Pimental (2-6, 6-2, 6-0). 

St. Mary’s (1-0) hosts Bishop Stang Wednesday (4).

Marblehead 5, Beverly 0

For Marblehead, Mika Garber (6-0, 6-2) won the first singles match. Second singles was won by Guillermo Jimenez-Herreria (6-1, 6-2), while third singles went to Matthew Sherf (7-5, 6-0). First doubles victory went to Jack Donovan and Dwight Foster, while second doubles went to Etan Farfel and Jayden Janock (6-1, 6-2).

Marblehead (2-1) goes to Danvers Thursday (4).  

GIRLS TENNIS

Lynn Classical 4, Everett 1

The Rams swept singles play behind wins from Kenzie McLaren (6-0, 6-1), Alyssa Raithel (6-0, 6-1) and Linda Jallow (6-1, 6-2), while the doubles team of Jauselin Mensah and Veronica Platero also picked up a win (6-0, 6-2). 

Classical (2-1) hosts Medford Wednesday (4).

Lynnfield 5, Bishop Fenwick 0

Winners for the Pioneers were Paige Martino (6-1, 6-2), Anna Radulski (6-4, 6-1) and Genna Gioioso (6-0, 6-1) in singles play and the teams of Lauren Grava-Maddie Sieve (6-1, 7-6) and Sarah Breslow-Leticia Marafon (6-4, 6-2) in doubles play.

Lynnfield (3-0) hosts Amesbury Wednesday (3:30).

Arlington Catholic 3, St. Mary’s 2

St. Mary’s got a singles win from Taylor Picardi (6-3, 6-2) and a doubles win from the team of Ana Parisi and Katie Miller (6-1, 6-1). 

St. Mary’s (1-1) is now off until April 25, when it will take on St. Joseph Prep. 

Marblehead 4, Beverly 1

Marblehead got its first victory of the season, winning four of their five sets. The first singles win came from Beverly with Elsie Carney (6-2, 6-4) but Marblehead controlled the rest of the way. Maddie Conlon (3-6, 6-2,10-7) won second singles. Third singles was taken by Charly Cooper (6-2, 6-4). First doubles victory went to Courtney Yoder and Ella Kramer (6-1, 6-1), with second doubles going to Aoife Breshnahan and Andrea Potivin (6-2, 6-0). 

Marblehead (1-0) hosts Peabody Wednesday (4).

BOYS OUTDOOR TRACK

Amesbury 84, Lynnfield 61

Despite dropping its second meet of the season, Lynnfield displayed some great performances. Joe Cucciniello placed first in three events — the 110-meter dash at an impressive 12.8 seconds, the triple jump 39 feet, 10 inches and the high jump at 5-8. Anthony Attubato took first in the long jump (19-6), Quinn Hardisty placed first in the javelin with a (137-3) and Ryan DeBenedictis took home the victory for the pole vault (9-10).

Lynnfield (0-2) gets back in action on Thursday (4) against Triton.
