Lynn native Rachel Brennan has been dominating the track since getting to Gordon College two years ago, and the sophomore has continued her dominance into the early part of the spring track season. For the second week in a row, the Lynn Classical graduate has been named the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Women’s Track Athlete of the Week for her continued excellence in the lanes this past weekend at the Gordon Spring Invitational.
Brennan stole the show in the 1500-meter run, crossing the finish line at the 4:52.35 mark to lead the pack of 30 competitors — including beating out 10 consecutive CCC student-athletes who finished directly behind her.
With her 1500 time, the sophomore has now set a new Gordon College women’s track-and-field record in each of the Fighting Scots’ three outdoor meets this season. She broke the 1500m record at Wesleyan on March 26, broke the 10,000m record at Tufts on April 2 and then re-broke her 1500m record at the Gordon Invitational on April 9.
The previous week, Brennan was also named CCC Track Athlete of the Week, that time for her exceptional performance at the Tufts Invitational.
The sophomore out-shined her opponents in the 10,000m race, crossing the finish line in 39:02.88 to earn the top spot. As well as a first-place finish in the event, Brennan crushed the previous 10,000m Gordon record — which was held by Sarah Loy in 2007 (40:27.14).
Brennan’s swift time also punched her a ticket to the NCAA Division III New England Championships, which will be hosted by Williams College and held on May 5 in Williamstown.
Brennan and the Fighting Scots return to action this coming Saturday as they travel to New London, Conn. to compete at the Connecticut College Invitational.
