To the editor:
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) left something very important out of its draft five-year Capital Investment Plan: electrification of the commuter rail in Lynn as part of the Newburyport/Rockport line.
Electric trains are more reliable than diesel trains and that translates to better service. Electric trains allow for more frequent service and shorter travel times. Electric trains do not give off fumes and that translates to environmental sustainability and better public-health outcomes.
In 2019, the MBTA’s Fiscal and Management Control Board passed a resolution committing to electrify the commuter rail, lower fares to the same fare as rapid transit, and run trains every 15 minutes.
We need the Capital Investment Plan to support these priorities. State Sen. Brendan Crighton, Lynn Mayor Jared Nicholson, and the Lynn City Council support electrification.
The MBTA needs to hear public support. I hope Lynn residents will voice their support for electrification by sending an email to [email protected] before April 25.
Lynn has been underserved by the MBTA. We deserve more. Electrify now!
