PEABODY — The Bishop Fenwick boys lacrosse team had trouble generating any momentum on either side of the field Wednesday evening, falling to Triton by a score of 12-5 in a non-league battle at Donaldson Stadium.
Manny Alvarez-Segee led the offense for the Crusaders, scoring two of the team’s five goals to go along with two assists. Tyler Mullen and Joey Marshay each had one goal and one assist, while Brady McClung had one goal.
Jared Leonard was the leading scorer for Triton with five goals, followed by Thomas Cahill with three goals and two assists. Seamus Cahill also found himself in the scoring column with two goals and one assist, while JP Trojan had one goal and two assists. Dylan Slimak also had one goal in the contest.
“I think being on vacation is affecting these kids,” said Fenwick head coach Dave MacKenzie. “We didn’t have a great practice this week, and it showed. There were a lot of mistakes and we just didn’t put all of our effort into today’s game.”
In the first half, the Crusaders found themselves going into the break down five (7-2), as they just could not get it together. The Vikings controlled the ball from the opening whistle to the closing whistle and were able to score freely to take the commanding lead.
“We just need to have a good practice (Thursday) and bounce back,” said MacKenzie. “We just have to tighten up and regain our focus. Hopefully we can go out and win during our next game.”
The Crusaders showed a brief sign of life in the second half when they were able to find the back of the Vikings’ net three times, quickly cutting the deficit down to five at one point during the third quarter.
However, Triton responded and grabbed two more goals to drive the stake further into the chest of the Crusaders and effectively seal the victory.
Tempers flared towards the end of the game when the Crusaders goalie picked up the ball, ran down the field and trucked over two of Triton’s players — which caused a small scuffle to form next to the sidelines before quickly being broken up.
Bishop Fenwick (3-2) looks to bounce back and get back into the winning column against Manchester-Essex at home Friday (5:30).
