LYNN — The City of Lynn is seeking to fill several full-time positions and hire more school crossing guards, while the Economic Development & Industrial Corporation of Lynn (EDIC) is looking for a bilingual outreach manager.
“One of the great benefits to working for the City of Lynn is the opportunity to do public service and to work on behalf of your fellow residents,” said Drew Russo, director of personnel. “The city is a great place to work. We try our best to keep our salary and benefits packages competitive.”
Russo said that his department has seen a very diverse, talented applicant pool of people, some of whom are looking to completely change their careers.
“I think that they have a real interest in working in city government, which is very exciting,” said Russo.
The hiring managers look holistically at applications, Russo said, taking into account not only education and qualifications but the range of experience and the type of work that candidates have done.
A lot of municipal positions fall under union collective-bargaining agreements or contracts. All full-time city employees have access to health and retirement benefits, including a health-insurance plan through Harvard Pilgrim, where the city as an employer pays 75 percent of the insurance cost.
City employees are also eligible for supplemental benefits like dental and life insurance and short-term disability and have the opportunity to apply to become a member of the Lynn retirement system, which would make them eligible for a pension after a certain number of years of service.
The city is looking to hire two specialists at the City Hall — an assistant financial manager and an assistant program manager for the Department of Community Development. Both positions are full-time.
The assistant financial manager will be responsible for a variety of financial-management functions, including oversight of financial transactions of the department, reports and databases.
This person will be supervising the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Integrated Disbursement and Information System (IDIS) plans, the annual action plan, and the consolidated plan. The assistant financial manager will also be responsible for the administration and coordination of the accounts payable and account receivable process, and the financial management of the Seaport Marina and Lynn Auditorium.
The position requires experience with tracking and maintaining budgets and a bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, public administration, or a related field.
The assistant financial manager will be paid a salary of $65,000 per year plus benefits.
The assistant program manager will provide general administrative, project related and clerical support to the program manager. This person will maintain project-operation records, files and work papers and provide special assistance on the department’s projects as needed.
This position requires experience with grant administration and project management and a bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, or a related field. The compensation offered is $65,000 plus benefits.
Both vacancies have a city residency requirement within six months of hire as of now. However, the City Council and mayor have started a process to amend this residency requirement to a preference by adopting a home-rule petition, which is under review by the state legislature.
The city strongly encourages bilingual and/or bicultural candidates to apply.
The deadline to apply is Monday, May 2.
EDIC is looking to add a bilingual outreach manager fluent in English and Spanish. This position assists EDIC’s diverse small-business community, provides office support to the organization and aids in expanding outreach throughout the Lynn business community.
The position offers a salary of $50,000 to $55,000 per year plus benefits. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
To apply for this position, interested candidates need to submit a resume and a cover letter to EDIC Executive Director James Cowdell at [email protected].
The Lynn Police Department is hiring school crossing guards for 10 hours per week on a rolling basis. This is a great part-time opportunity for those who have a desire to help keep the city kids safe, said Russo.
Crossing guards work 10 hours a week, an hour in the morning before school and an hour when school gets out. The pay rate is $15 an hour.
Individuals of 70 years of age and older will need to provide a physician’s certification of good health for this job.
All job postings and applications can be found on the city’s website at www.lynnma.gov or an active Facebook page “City of Lynn Jobs,” where the personnel department shares and promotes openings.
Completed applications can be submitted via regular post; e-mail at [email protected]; the City Hall drop box at the Johnson Street entrance or in person at Room 307 in City Hall during regular business hours.
