PEABODY — The Bishop Fenwick girls lacrosse team brought out the offensive firepower Friday night at Donaldson Stadium, taking home a 16-1 victory over Matignon in a Catholic Central League bout.
Fenwick captain Karina Gyllenhaal led the offensive onslaught for Fenwick with six goals, while Hannah Bettencourt and Francesca Herbert contributed three goals apiece. Kayla Carlin scored two goals, while Samantha Montecalvo and Jenna Oliver each scored one goal.
The first half started when Fenwick scored its first goal in the early going and never looked back. Matignon couldn’t piece anything together. The Fenwick girls dominated every aspect of the game, playing great defense by forcing turnovers and not allowing Matignon to get off any shots.
On the other side, Fenwick was able to move the ball up and down the field freely, and almost every shot it took found the back of the Matignon net. As the time dwindled away in the first half, Fenwick led 13-0, not giving Matignon a chance.
“We’ve had a few bad losses up until this point and we really needed to work on our fundamentals, so that’s where our focus has been in practice,” said Fenwick head coach Joe Dellanno. “I think (Friday), the girls really came out ready to play and their effort really reflected that.”
The second half opened up the same way, when Fenwick grabbed three early goals within the first five minutes of the half to extend its already insurmountable lead.
Things remained that way until Matignon’s Brynn MacPherson scored their first and only goal of the game to help her team avoid the shutout. However, Fenwick responded on the very next possession with a goal of its own. The game ended the way it began — with Fenwick controlling the game.
“We have a lot of young kids on this team, and a lot of them got to go out there for the first time and score their first goals,” said Dellanno. “Our captains Eve Watson and Karina Gyllenhaal were essential in helping with the growth of these younger girls, and I couldn’t be more proud of the growth of all these girls.”
The Fenwick girls showed a lot of energy throughout the whole contest, as their bench never went quiet. They cheered for every goal, every turnover, every blocked shot. Anything positive that went in its way, the team was loud and proud.
Bishop Fenwick (3-5) is back in action on Monday (3:30) against Bishop Feehan.
