School Sports Roundup: Swampscott baseball bounces back with walk-off win

Thanks to a walk-off RBI single from John Cuttle in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Swampscott baseball team bounced back in solid fashion with a 2-1 victory over Saugus in a Northeastern Conference battle at Forest Avenue Park. 

Cuttle went 2-for-3 with one RBI in the win, while Aiden Wyse went 0-for-3 with one RBI. Cam O’Brien (1-for-3) added the only other hit for the Big Blue. 

Pierce Friedman pitched a gem on the mound to earn the victory, tossing all eight innings and allowing one run on five hits with nine strikeouts. 

Swampscott (4-2) travels to Winthrop Wednesday (4).

Nathan Ing and Anthony Cicolini each went 2-for-3 in the loss for the Sachems, while Ryan Anderson went 1-for-3. Ing got the start on the mound and went five innings, allowing one run on two hits with four strikeouts. Cam Soroko and Matt MacEachern each pitched an inning of relief. 

Saugus (4-4) hosts Gloucester Wednesday (4:30).

BASEBALL

Lynn Tech 14, Innovation 1

Right fielder Wes Morales had a huge day at the plate for the Tigers, going 2-for-3 with five RBI to pace the offense. Domenic Giordano added two RBI in the win, while Ben Tartarini went 3-for-3 with one RBI. 

Tartarini also earned the start on the mound and struck out five batters in five innings of work to earn the win, while Jared Paone closed out the game with five strikeouts.

Lynn Tech (3-1) hosts Mystic Valley Tuesday (4).

St. Mary’s 6, Niles Valley (Ohio) 2
Highland Regional (N.J.) 4, St. Mary’s 1

The Spartans split their final two games in Myrtle Beach Friday.

In the first game against Niles Valley, Jack Marks went 1-for-2 with two RBI, while Aiven Cabral (0-for-3), Tad Giardina (0-for-3), John Nowicki (1-for-3) and Ryan Fraher (0-for-1) each had one RBI. Eric Bridges earned the complete-game victory on the mound, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts. 

The Spartans couldn’t get much going offensively in the second game, as Cabral, Nowicki, Giardina and Zach Fisher each had one hit. 

St. Mary’s (5-3) returns to Massachusetts for a home game against Cardinal Spellman Monday (4).

Winthrop 5, Danvers 4

Joe Ferullo was the star of the day for the Vikings, knocking a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Winthrop the thrilling victory.

Ferullo went 1-for-3 with one RBI in the win, while Colin Kinsella led the offense by going 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI. Joe Hayes went 2-for-4 with one RBI. 

On the mound, Zach Bogusz got the start and went six innings, allowing four runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts. Jay Fotiades earned the win after his one inning of relief work in which he allowed just one hit. 

Winthrop (5-3) hosts Swampscott Wednesday (4).

Bishop Fenwick 9, Manchester-Essex 8

After jumping ahead early and then being forced to battle back from behind, it was Takumi Yoshida who came through with the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the seventh inning. 

Nick Caputo had a double and three RBI to lead the offense, while Anthony Marino had a triple and two RBI. Dan Reddick and Andrew McKenzie each had one RBI in the win. 

Mike Geissler picked up the win on the mound for the Crusaders after tossing two scoreless innings of relief. 

Bishop Fenwick (2-6) hosts Bishop Feehan Monday (3:30).

Marblehead 7, Masconomet 3

The Magicians fell behind early, but they rallied by scoring seven unanswered runs to take home the victory. 

AJ Andriano went 1-for-4 with two RBI in the win, while Andrew Titus (2-for-4), Grant Hunter (2-for-4) and Schuyler Schmitt (1-for-1) each had one RBI. 

Chris Dewitt earned the win in relief after tossing three scoreless innings and allowing three hits with two strikeouts. Drew Whitman got the start and went the first four innings, allowing three runs on two hits with six strikeouts. 

Marblehead (3-5) hosts Peabody Wednesday (4).

St. John’s Prep 9, Haverhill 8

The Eagles scored eight runs in the final three innings to come from behind to notch the road win. 

Shane Williams led the offense by going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Kyle Webster went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Nick Solitro (1-for-3), Caleb Birchem (1-for-2), Cam LaGrassa (1-for-3) and Aidan Driscoll (0-for-3) each had one RBI in the win. 

St. John’s Prep (5-1) has a quick turnaround with a game against Franklin Saturday (3).

Gloucester 9, Peabody 4

The Tanners were done in by an eight-run inning from the Fishermen as they fell at Donohue Field. 

Peabody (5-2) hosts Beverly Monday afternoon (4).

Beverly 12, Salem 0

Salem (0-6) now has a full week off before hosting Peabody Friday (4).

SOFTBALL

St. Mary’s 4, Audobon (N.J.) 0

The Spartans wrapped up their trip to Myrtle Beach with a shutout victory, as Lily Newhall once again tossed a complete game on the mound with seven strikeouts. 

Michaela Walker, Brooke Moloney, Jenna Chaplain, Emely Rodriguez and Roma Braid all had hits for the Spartans during a four-run sixth inning that helped seal the victory. 

St. Mary’s (6-1) travels to Cardinal Spellman Monday (3:30).

Swampscott 3, Marblehead 0

Jocelyn Spickard had another great day on the mound for the Big Blue, tossing a complete-game shutout and giving up just four hits. 

Swampscott (4-2) takes on Arlington Catholic in the opening round of the Krystle Campbell Tournament Saturday afternoon (1).

Marblehead (2-4) travels to Rockport Monday (4:30).

Beverly 10, Saugus 1

The Sachems were only able to scatter three hits in the loss, as Ryann Moloney went 2-for-3 and Taylor Deleidi went 1-for-3. 

Saugus (3-4) hosts Pentucket Monday (4).

BOYS LACROSSE

Bishop Fenwick 10, Manchester-Essex 6

Manny Alvarez-Segee had a huge game with six goals and one assist, while Kevin Wood and Tyler Mullen each had one goal and one assist. Goalie Will Gibbs made 15 saves and also notched two assists in the win. 

Bishop Fenwick (4-2) hosts Bishop Feehan Monday (4).

GIRLS LACROSSE

Archbishop Williams 16, St. Mary’s 5

Kasey Litwin, Molly Cummings, Ava Nason, Jill Kirby and Hannah Coleman each scored one goal in the loss for the Spartans, while goalie Payton Quirk played well in net. 

St. Mary’s (1-5) travels to Cardinal Spellman Monday (6:30).
