PEABODY — The Peabody girls lacrosse team jumped ahead early and never looked back Saturday afternoon, notching a 16-6 win over Marblehead in a Northeastern Conference battle at Coley Lee Field.
McKayla Fisher led the offensive attack for the Tanners with five goals and one assist, while Madi Barrett wasn’t far behind with three goals and three assists. Siobhan Smith contributed three goals and two assists, Lauren Woods scored three goals and Brooke Lomasney had two goals and one assist. Ally Bettencourt added one assist in the win.
For Marblehead, Sydney Langton led the way with three goals. Gigi Lombardi added two goals, while Hadley Wales had one goal and two assists. Goalie Kate Santeusanio made nine saves in the loss.
The Tanners got off to a blazing start in this one, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game behind goals from Fisher (two), Barrett and Woods. Marblehead finally broke the streak on a goal from Lombardi with 17:37 to play in the first half, but Peabody responded with another flurry to close things out. Barrett scored twice, while Woods and Fisher each found the back of the net once to make it an 8-1 game at the halftime break.
Peabody continued that strong play into the second half, as Smith got in on the action with a pair of early goals and Woods and Fisher each added one within the first five minutes of play.
Langton’s goal for Marblehead made it a 12-2 game, and the tally actually gave the Magicians some life midway through the second half. Marblehead went on a 3-0 run behind one goal each from Langton, Wales and Lombardi, and all of a sudden the score was 12-5 Peabody and the Magicians were rolling.
Fisher added a goal for Peabody before Langton netted her third of the game to make it 13-6, but that was as close as things would get. The Tanners scored the final three goals of the game — two from Lomasney and one from Smith — in the final two minutes of play to seal the victory.
Marblehead (2-7) hosts Beverly Monday (4).
Peabody (4-2) plays a non-league game on the road at Dracut Monday (5:30).
