School Sports Roundup: Lynnfield baseball struggles in loss to Malden Catholic

The Lynnfield baseball team struggled on both sides of the field Saturday afternoon, falling to Malden Catholic by a score of 12-0 in a non-league game at Lynnfield High School. 

“It wasn’t a good day for us out there,” said Lynnfield coach John O’Brien. “We didn’t hit well, we didn’t pitch well and we didn’t field well. You’re not going to win many games like that.”

Lynnfield (1-5) hosts Ipswich Tuesday (3:45).

BASEBALL

Gloucester 9, Lynn English 0

The Bulldogs fell behind early and could never get any momentum going, only scattering four hits on the day. 

Kenry Manzanillo went 1-for-2 with a double to lead the way, while Yordy Contreras (1-for-3), Guilmer Galva (1-for-3) and Eldrian Bonilla (1-for-3) each had a base hit in the loss. 

Lynn English (2-4) travels to Malden Monday (4).

Franklin 14, St. John’s Prep 4

Theo Vetere went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI in the loss for the Eagles, while Jack Fillion went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Tucker Larson had two hits on the day, while Nick Solitro and Cam LaGrassa each had one hit. 

St. John’s Prep (5-2) travels to BC High Monday (4).

SOFTBALL

Bishop Fenwick 12, Rockport 5

Gigi Aupont had another great day in the circle to lead the way for the Crusaders, tossing a complete game and allowing five runs on two hits with 10 strikeouts. 

On the offensive end, Arianna Costello went 4-for-5 with three RBI. Emma Burke went 2-for-2 with two RBI, while Meghan Burkinshaw went 3-for-4.

Bishop Fenwick (4-2) travels to Bishop Feehan Monday (3:30).

Wayland 12, Winthrop 10

Winthrop (2-6) hosts Masconomet Wednesday (4).

Krystle Campbell Tournament

at Medford High School

First Round (Saturday)

Arlington Catholic 14, Swampscott 2

The Big Blue committed nine errors in the opening round game and could never get any momentum going. 

Consolation Game (Sunday)

Medford 7, Swampscott 6

Jocelyn Spickard had a great day in the circle for Swampscott, striking out 13 in a close loss. Nicolette Fraser led the way on offense for the Big Blue, notching three hits — including a triple. 

Swampscott (4-4) hosts Saugus Wednesday (4:30).

BOYS LACROSSE

Marblehead 18, Peabody 2

Carter Laramie led the way for the Magicians with five goals, while Josh Robertson was close behind with four goals and Connor Cronin added three goals and two assists. Charlie Grenier added two goals, while Cole Gallup had one goal and two assists. Tucker Lubeck, Drew Nelson and Cam Waldman each scored their first career varsity goal in the win, while Finn Maniaci (nine saves) and Aiden Thang (two saves) combined for the win in net. 

Marblehead (5-2) plays on the road at Beverly Monday (4).

Nick Salvati and Cam Collins each scored one goal in the loss for the Tanners, while Matthew Lindstrom had one assist. Goalie Derek Patturelli made 11 saves.

Peabody (2-4) is now off until Thursday (4) when it hosts Danvers.

Championship Game

St. John’s Prep 14, Franklin 13

Tommy Sarni was the star of the day in the win for the Eagles, scoring the game-winning goal with one second remaining to give St. John’s Prep the Creator’s Crosse Tournament title. 

Sarni finished with six goals and two assists on the day to lead the Prep offense, while Charlie Wilmot notched four goals and one assist. Jimmy Ayers added three goals and one assist, while Lucas Verrier scored one goal. Jake Vana had four assists, while Noah Brown and Tyee Ambrosh each had one assist. Goalie Teddy Cullinane made 14 saves.

St. John’s Prep (7-2) hosts Malden Catholic Tuesday evening (5:30).
