LYNN — Kiley Park trash dumpers ended up cleaning up their mess over the weekend after being tracked down by police.
Ward 3 Councilor Constantino “Coco” Alinsug and his husband were passing by Kiley on Saturday night when they came across a large pile of trash on the side of Sanderson Avenue.
“Somebody from our city just parked their car and dumped all the trash in the world from shoes and clothes to utensils, a table and winter coats,” said Alinsug. “This is just a big slap on our city’s face.”
Notably, the park had been cleaned up by volunteers on April 9 as part of the “Keep Lynn Clean” neighborhood campaign.
The area is poorly lit and the old buildings across the park don’t have any video cameras on them so people can do illegal things in the dark, Alinsug said.
“I need to do something with Kiley Park because it is one of those parts that really needs attention,” he said.
Alinsug called the Department of Public Works, the Health Department and Lynn police about the incident.
The Lynn Police Department responded to his complaint and took a report on Sunday, said Lt. Michael Kmiec. Lynn detectives were able to track the culprit by the documents left among the disposed items.
The offender was a Lynn resident from Ward 4, Alinsug said. They were charged with unlawful disposal of trash and will have to appear in court.
The fine for unlawful disposal of trash might be up to $5,500 for the first offense, Kmiec said.
“Big salute to our Lynn police because they went above and beyond to track the person,” said Alinsug.
The offender had to go back to Kiley Park and remove the trash they had disposed of. Alinsug hopes this story will serve as a big lesson to the people who read it, he said.
