WINTHROP — After battling through three scoreless innings at Veterans Field, the Swampscott baseball team scored five runs over the final four innings to pick up a 5-2 win over Winthrop on the road in a Northeastern Conference battle Wednesday afternoon.
Matt Schroeder went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base to lead the way for the Big Blue, while Jonah Cadorette went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Harry Riddell added an RBI single in the win, while Cam O’Brien drew four walks and scored a run.
On the mound, John Cuttle earned the win after tossing a complete game and allowing two runs (none earned) on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
Colin Kinsella went 1-for-3 with one RBI in the loss for Winthrop, while Phil Boncore went 1-for-1 with one RBI. Matt DeCarney (2-for-3), Joe Hayes (1-for-3), Cam Martin(1-for-2), and Zach Bogusz (1-for-3) each had hits in the loss.
Martin also pitched a solid game on the mound in the loss, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing four runs on three hits with six strikeouts. DeCarney went 1 2/3 innings in relief, allowing one run on three hits with one strikeout.
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie through the first three innings, but Swampscott was finally able to break through in the top of the fourth.
After two walks and a hit batter loaded up the bases, Schroeder stepped into the box and launched a deep RBI sacrifice fly to left field, putting the Big Blue ahead 1-0.
After Cuttle moved through the Winthrop side in order in the bottom of the fourth, the Big Blue came up in the top of the fifth and pushed another run across thanks to some small ball. A walk, a single and a sacrifice bunt set things up for Riddell, who dropped an RBI bunt single to bring in a run and make it 2-0.
Boncore’s RBI single in the bottom of the fifth brought Winthrop back to within one, but the Big Blue answered right back in the sixth when Cadorette lined a double into left field and pushed Swampscott’s lead to 4-1.
Even though Winthrop got another run back in the bottom of the sixth on Kinsella’s RBI single, Swampscott grabbed one more insurance run when Schroeder lined an RBI single up the middle in the top of the seventh.
Winthrop (5-4) hosts Lowell Catholic Saturday (11).
Swampscott (5-2) plays a doubleheader against Marblehead Saturday (1&3).
