LYNN — A man is facing charges from two police departments after leading police on a car chase Friday in Lynn, where he struck an officer and two unmarked cruisers, before he was taken into custody in Swampscott, where he had struck another officer, Lynn Police Lt. Michael Kmiec said.
The man, who is in custody at a local hospital and has therefore not been booked or identified by police, initiated the pursuit after Lynn officers tried to stop his vehicle at approximately 3:30 p.m. in the area of Pinkham and Violet streets, Kmiec said.
Kmiec said officers tried to stop the man, who was the subject of an ongoing investigation, because they believed he was in possession of a firearm. As officers approached the vehicle, the man took off, and allegedly struck two unmarked police vehicles and a Lynn officer in the process, he said.
The incident prompted a brief police pursuit, which the Lynn department terminated due to the danger posed by the chase. A description of the man’s vehicle was sent out to surrounding police departments, and he was later located in Swampscott, Kmiec said.
Lynn, Swampscott and State Police attempted to stop the man’s vehicle in Swampscott, but he again tried to take off, striking another Lynn police officer in his attempt to flee the scene. This time, the officer who was struck sustained injuries, and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, Kmiec said.
The suspect was eventually taken into custody, and transported to a local hospital for treatment. Both the suspect and police officer have minor injuries, Kmiec said.
Police recovered a firearm from the man’s vehicle, and are seeking additional search warrants, one of which will be for the suspect’s car, Kmiec said.
The man is expected to face charges from both the Lynn and Swampscott Police departments, which will include motor-vehicle charges related to the chase and unlawful possession of a firearm, Kmiec said.
“There’s going to be charges in Lynn,” said Kmiec. “There’s also going to be charges in Swampscott. The officers in Swampscott are going to summons him and we’re going to take custody of him and have the initial arrest.”
The incident remains under investigation.
