To the editor:
Despite what some local people here in Nahant think about coyotes being safe to be around — it’s just the opposite.
Coyotes are opportunistic and unpredictable by nature. They have, and continue to eat small dogs and cats left unattended outside.
Many people and pets across the country have been bitten by coyotes.
A young woman was stalked and killed by a pack of coyotes in the Canadian National Park.
Some say that they are not a threat to humans. Really? I’ve encountered them on walks around town and they are not always willing to let me pass. I sometimes carry an old ax handle for safety, as do other folks. I’ve also encountered them when I walked my German shepherd, Otto.
People need to wake up. I hope it doesn’t take the tragedy of a toddler being attacked before we take coyotes seriously. They should be humanely trapped and transported to the woods to be released.
This should help keep the population under control. Otherwise, we will be overrun by them.
