SAUGUS — Breakheart Reservation has announced several upcoming free public programs for hiking and fishing, which will be available throughout the month of May.
“We are so excited to be offering programming again,” said Brett Power, the visitor services supervisor at Breakheart Reservation.
Celebrate the spring season on Signs of Spring Hike, on Sunday, May 15 and 29, from 10 a.m. to noon. On this two-mile hike along the rocky trails, the hikers will have an additional opportunity to enjoy the blossoming spring season during several planned halts. Adults and older children are invited to participate.
“Spring has sprung. Join our park interpreter to discover some of the telltale signs that show the changing of the seasons,” reads the press release issued by Breakheart Reservation.
For history fans and story lovers, Breakheart Reservation runs Stories in Stone Hike on Sunday, May 8 and 22, from 10 a.m. to noon. On these tours, participants can discover the history of the location through the stone artifacts left by those who called this place home.
“Breakheart has been shaped not only by nature, but by the many people who have called it home,” says the press release.
This is a 2.5-mile, moderate hike along rocky trails with several stops, and it would be most suitable for adults and older children with a keen interest in history.
More experienced hikers, ages 8 and up, might wish to join the Off the Beaten Path weekly hikes, on the Saturdays of May 14 and 28 from 10 a.m. to noon. These hikes range from two to four miles, over uneven and rocky terrain.
“Each trip will highlight natural and historic features that make Breakheart unique,” reads the press release.
The meet-up for all the hiking activities is outside the Visitor Center, at 177 Forest St.
If people prefer a more relaxing way of spending their holidays, they are encouraged to join Family Fishing Saturdays on May 7 and 21 for a drop-in fishing program. Bait and a handful of rods will be provided, but the visitors are encouraged to bring their own gear.
“Learn how to fish, what fish live in our ponds, and how to catch and release responsibly,” states the press release.
This event is most appropriate for kids age 5 and up. No license is required if fishing in this program. The meeting place is at the left side of Pearce Lake Beach at 10 a.m., and the activity ends at 11:30 a.m.
“Fish with us and share your tips,” reads the press release.
All the programs are free and available to the public, but inclement weather, i.e., rain, cancels the outdoor programs. The participants are advised to be aware that the children must be accompanied by an adult. Free parking is provided at the location.
“Bring water, use sunscreen/bug spray, dress in comfortable layers, and wear sturdy closed-toe shoes,” reads the press release.
