Swampscott native and Holy Cross junior golfer Christian Emmerich made a bit of history for his team this week, as the former St. Mary’s star earned a First Team All-Patriot League selection — becoming the first Crusader in more than 10 years to earn such an honor.
Emmerich is only the ninth Holy Cross golfer to earn first team honors in school history, and the first since Steve Zychowski did so in 2011.
Emmerich capped off his season as one of the top golfers at the Patriot League Championship, where he finished fifth overall in the individual tournament with a three-day score of 218 (+2) (71-74-73) at The Steel Club in Hellertown, Pa.
Freshman Owen Egan finished in a tie for 10th place after recording a score of 222 (+6), while senior John Bowen also finished inside the top 20 in a tie for 16th — recording a score of 224 (+8).
Their efforts helped Holy Cross post a sixth-place finish in the team competition.
“As they have done throughout the year, Christian Emmerich, Owen Egan, and John Bowen played solid golf,” said Holy Cross head coach Steve Napoli. “There’s a tremendous amount of talent in the Patriot League and this is our highest finish at the League Championship since 2011. We thank our graduating seniors Collin Fitzpatrick, Jack Phelan and John Bowen for their contributions the past four years. We have an extremely talented class of freshman recruits arriving in the fall, and we have high hopes for future success.”
Emmerich had a great junior campaign, playing 10 of 11 events and 25 total rounds. His scoring average of 75.36 was second on the team only to Egan, and he was the top Holy Cross finisher at four different events.
