LYNN — The Lynn English baseball team scored a run in the bottom of the first and it held up all game long, as the Bulldogs ended up riding a solid pitching performance to a 5-0 win over Everett in a Greater Boston League bout at Fraser Field Monday afternoon.
That stellar pitching performance came from Ray Contreras, as the senior went six innings and allowed just one hit while striking out three. Contreras initially burst onto the scene last season for the Bulldogs, when he threw a no-hitter in his first-ever varsity start.
Alex MacMillan came on to pitch one inning of relief for English, allowing just one hit while striking out two.
On the offensive side of things, Chris Figuereo Perez led the way by going 1-for-3 with two RBI. Yordy Contreras went 1-for-4 with a triple and one RBI, while Guilmer Galva (1-for-3), Mateo Rodriguez (1-for-3), and Kenry Manzanillo (1-for-3) each had a hit.
The Bulldogs jumped right out to a lead in the bottom of the first, starting with a single from Galva. After Galva stole second base, Brendan Falasca hit a hard ground ball and reached on an error by the Everett third baseman — which in turn brought Galva around to score and make it 1-0 English.
The score remained there until the bottom of the fifth, as Ray Contreras retired 12 of the next 13 batters he faced to keep the Bulldogs ahead.
English was able to add some insurance runs from there, starting when Nevin Gonzalez drew a one-out walk. Two batters later, Yordy Contreras stepped in and launched an RBI triple down the left-field line to double up the lead at 2-0. Two batters after that, Eldrian Bonilla hit a hard grounder that turned into an error for Everett and allowed Yordy Contreras to come home and make it 3-0.
The Bulldogs rounded out the scoring in the bottom of the sixth, when Figuereo Perez ripped an RBI single up the middle to bring home a run. The relay throw into the infield got away from Everett due to another error, and that allowed the fifth and final run to come home for the Bulldogs.
MacMillan came in and closed things out from there, moving through the top of the seventh in 20 pitches to secure the victory.
