LYNN — The Lynn English baseball team picked up a big win Wednesday night at Fraser Field, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth and then hanging on to take down cross-town foe Lynn Classical by a score of 4-2.

Manuel Taveras tossed a gem on the mound for the Bulldogs, going the distance and allowing two runs on seven hits with 11 strikeouts.

In terms of offense, Eldrian Bonilla was the star for English after going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Brendan Falasca (2-for-3), and Kenry Manzanillo (0-for-1) each added one RBI in the win, while Yordy Contreras (1-for-3) and Guilmer Galva (1-for-3) each had a hit.

Christian Spates went 1-for-3 with the lone RBI on the night for Classical, while Brady Warren went 1-for-2 with a triple. Christian Figueroa went 2-for-3, while Tyler Wilson, Juniel Guzman and Kyle Durant each had one hit.

Durant got the start on the mound and earned the no-decision after going four innings and allowing two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts. Kevin Whalen took the loss on the mound after allowing two runs on two hits with four strikeouts in two innings of relief.

English struck first in this one, jumping ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first behind an RBI double from Bonilla.

Bonilla came back with another RBI double in the bottom of the third to make it a 2-0 game, then Classical answered back in the top of the fourth with a run on an RBI single from Spates. After Spates stole home, the game was tied at 2-2.

English took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth, starting with a leadoff walk by Contreras. Bonilla then singled to get two men on, and Falasca came through with an RBI single to put the Bulldogs back in front. Two batters later, with the bases loaded, Manzanillo drew an RBI walk to give English all the insurance it would need.

Lynn Classical (11-3) turns right around and plays on the road at Everett Thursday (4).

Lynn English (8-4) hosts Gloucester Saturday afternoon (1).
