For their exploits both on the field and in the classroom this year, Lynn English has selected seniors Kelsey McNeil and Miguel Mercedes as the school’s representatives as Greater Boston League Student-Athletes of the Year.
McNeil was born in Beverly and raised in Lynn. She is the daughter of Tarra Gendron and Eric McNeil.
McNeil found a love for sports when she was four years old and never looked back. Throughout her four years attending English, she has played three sports on a varsity level — cheerleading, basketball, and softball.
McNeil was named captain her junior year of high school for softball and basketball. She was also named captain her senior year for cheerleading and softball. Academically, McNeil is an honor roll student taking college preparatory and honors classes.
Any free time she had, McNeil was always giving back to the community by volunteering with the Special Olympics — helping children and young adults playing basketball games. She volunteered at cheering practices and competitions for the youth. She also spent time working at the public pantry to help feed families in need.
McNeil sports a 3.7 GPA, leading her to be accepted into 12 colleges into their nursing program. As of right now she remains undecided on which college she will be attending in the fall semester of 2022.
Mercedes is the son of Miguel and Gloria Mercedes, and brother to Leslie and Nicole Mercedes. As an honor roll student, Mercedes ranks 22 out of 473 students and maintains a 4.1 GPA.
He is a recipient of the Wentworth President’s Award, which is a merit scholarship awarded to academically talented students as a symbol of Wentworth’s commitment to educating the architects, designers, engineers, technologists and future leaders needed by our society.
Mercedes has done community service by volunteering at My Brothers Table and helping at the Boys and Girls club in Lynn.
Athletically, Mercedes has been a member of the English baseball team, winter indoor track and field team and spring outdoor track and field team. In his senior year Mercedes threw the shot put for winter indoor track and field and made it to the GBL League championship meet. He is hoping to do it again for shot put and javelin this spring track season.
Mercedes has been accepted to Wentworth Institute of Technology, Umass Amherst, Umass Lowell, and Umass Boston. He will go on to study computer engineering at Wentworth Institute of Technology.
