The Lynn English baseball team pushed across three runs in the bottom of the fourth and then held on the rest of the way Wednesday afternoon, notching a 3-2 win over Malden in a Greater Boston League bout at Fraser Field.
Jason Figuereo went 1-for-3 with a double, one RBI and one run scored in the win, while Justin Jimenez went 2-for-3 with a double. Yordy Contreras went 2-for-2, while Eldrian Bonilla (1-for-3, double), Brendan Falasca (1-for-3), and Chris Figuereo Perez (1-for-3) all had hits.
Jimenez picked up the win on the mound for the Bulldogs after getting the start and pitching four solid innings, allowing two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts. Alex MacMillan went the final three innings of relief, allowing no runs on two hits with three strikeouts.
Lynn English (11-6) returns to action Friday night (7) against Swampscott in the opening round of the inaugural Doug Mullins Memorial Tournament.
BASEBALL
Saugus 13, Everett 3 (F/6)
It was a 2-2 game through three innings, but the Sachems exploded for six runs in the fourth and five more in the sixth to pull away and earn the victory.
Cam Soroko and Anthony Macone led a Saugus offense that scattered 15 hits on the day, with Macone going 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI and Soroko going 2-for-5 with three RBI. Michael Howard went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while Ryan Mabee (3-for-4), Nathan Ing (2-for-3), Ryan Anderson (2-for-4) and Drew Gardner (1-for-3, double) each had one RBI.
And while the offense was great, the pitching was just as good for the Sachems. Mabee got the start and picked up the win, going 4 1/3 innings and allowing two runs on two hits with six strikeouts. Anthony Macone pitched 2/3 of an inning and didn’t allow a hit, while Danny Zietz allowed one run on three hits in one inning of work.
Saugus (9-10) closes out the season Friday (4) with a rematch against Everett on Senior Day at World Series Park.
Lynn Tech 13, Minuteman 2
The Tigers bounced back with a big win Wednesday, led by two-RBI games from Ben Tartarini, Will McCafferty and Kolby Bucklin. Colni Newhall added one RBI, while Josh Celly and Wesley Morales each had two hits. Tyler Maynard and Mario Giordano each had one hit in the win.
McCafferty picked up the win on the mound after striking out 10 through six innings, while Jared Paone pitched one inning of relief. McCafferty now has 40 strikeouts over the last four games that he’s pitched.
Lynn Tech (11-6) closes out the regular season Saturday morning (10) against Nashoba Tech at Fraser Field.
St. John’s Prep 11, Lawrence 7
The Eagles were led by Payton Palladino, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI in the win. Aidan Driscoll went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Tucker Larson went 2-for-3 with one run scored.
St. John’s Prep (11-7) hosts Chelmsford Friday (4).
Revere 4, Somerville 2
The game was tied at 2-2 heading into the seventh inning before Kyle Cummings broke the tie with a two-run double.
Chris Cassidy picked up the win on the mound in relief for the Patriots, with he and Mike Popp combining to allow two runs (none earned) on three hits.
Revere closes the regular season at 13-7 and now looks ahead to the upcoming Division 1 state tournament. The Patriots are currently the No. 57-ranked team in the latest MIAA power rankings.
Gloucester 7, Salem 2
Salem (1-14) hosts Tewksbury Friday (4).
SOFTBALL
Malden Catholic 13, Marblehead 1 (F/6)
The Magicians struggled in the field in the loss Wednesday.
Grace Martin went all six innings on the mound, allowing 13 runs — only six of them earned — on 10 hits with two strikeouts.
Martin (1-for-3), Dylan Kerble (1-for-2, run scored), Annika Haley (1-for-3) and Caroline Brennan (1-for-1) each had one hit in the loss.
Marblehead (6-13) wraps up the season Friday (4:30) at home against Saugus.
North Reading 21, Lynnfield 4
Lynnfield (6-12) closes out the season Friday (3:45) on the road at Austin Prep.
BOYS LACROSSE
Saugus 10, Lynn 7
The Sachems celebrated Senior Night by getting revenge for a double-overtime loss to the Jets last week.
Prior to the game, Saugus honored its group of 10 seniors for their contributions to the program over the years.
Max Anajjar led the Sachems with three goals, while Logan McGovern and Tyler Morley each scored two goals. Nicky Rosa, Cam Zabroski and Matty Robbins each added one goal in the win.
Saugus wraps up the season at 3-12.
Ryan Dunn led the way for the Jets with four goals, while Stephen Difilippo scored three goals. Jordan Em, Nick Costa and Ethan Wilson each had one assist, while goalie Nate Sisson made 12 saves.
Lynn closes the regular season at 8-6 and now looks ahead to the Division 1 state tournament. The Jets are currently the No. 46-ranked team in the latest MIAA power rankings.
GIRLS TENNIS
Lynnfield 3, Marblehead 2
The Pioneers and Magicians split up the matches in their respective season finales Wednesday, with Lynnfield winning all three singles matches and Marblehead capturing both doubles matches.
The winners on the day for the Pioneers were Paige Martino in first singles (6-1, 6-3), Anna Radulski in second singles (6-0, 6-0) and Genna Gioioso in third singles (6-0, 6-3).
Lynnfield wraps the regular season at 13-5 and now looks ahead to the Division 4 state tournament. The Pioneers are currently the No. 4-ranked team in the latest MIAA power rankings.
For the Magicians, the wins came from the team of Ella Kramer and Courtney Yoder in first doubles (6-2, 6-4) and the team of Leah Schauer and Aviva Bornstein in second doubles (6-2, 2-6, 10-5).
