LYNN — With contract negotiations between the Lynn Teachers Union and School officials stalled for a third week, Union leadership met with members Wednesday evening.
Although Union leadership and school officials declined to talk about details of Wednesday’s discussion at Classical High School, it reportedly included discussion of financial aspects of a potential contract.
Lynn Teachers Union Local 1037 is among the largest unions – public or private – in the city, with 1,600 members. Membership extends far beyond teachers to include para-professionals and therapists.
Teachers were vocal in a May 18 “walk-in” that saw the Union educators enter their schools en- masse to demonstrate solidarity with their bargaining unit. Union President Sheila O’Neil told The Item on that day that the union wants “our contracts to be settled fairly and swiftly.”
Teachers staged a public demonstration of their bargaining requests May 18, focusing on smaller class sizes.
Negotiations stalled on May 4, with O’Neil stating the day of the walk-in that a union package had not been met with a counter offer. School administrators would not comment Wednesday on contract talk status. However, School Committee member Lennin Peña, was hopeful when asked about the status of talks walking into Classical Wednesday.
“I hope we can move things forward,” Peña said.
