LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield girls lacrosse team closed out its 2022 regular season in style Thursday evening, notching a 14-10 win over Malden Catholic in a non-conference battle at Pioneer Stadium.
“It really was a great way to close out the season,” said Lynnfield coach Christina Serra, who is in her first season at the helm. “We had a rough game the other night, so it was great to see the girls bounce back and have a great performance (Thursday). I was really proud of their effort.”
The Pioneers also celebrated “Youth Night” at Pioneer Stadium Thursday, as a number of young lacrosse players from grades K-12 gathered for a group picture pregame and ran some drills during the halftime break.
“It was an amazing night,” said Serra, who is also the director of the youth lacrosse program in Lynnfield. “To have so many young girls come out and be a part of the festivities and then be up in the stands all night cheering, it really gave us a boost out there.”
As for the action on the field, it was a pair of freshmen and a senior captain who led the offensive attack for the Pioneers. Freshman Sarah Powers had three goals and three assists to lead the way, while fellow freshman Taylor Valiton and senior captain Anna Kaminski each had three goals and one assist. Chloe Considine added three goals in the victory, while Maddie Mastrangelo and Catherine Sweeney each scored one goal.
Lynnfield closes the regular season at 5-11 and hopes to earn enough ranking points to sneak into the upcoming Division 4 state tournament. The Pioneers are currently the No. 27 team in the latest MIAA power rankings, but they do not have an automatic bid because they finished below .500 on the season. The top 32 teams make it into the bracket.
“As far as I know it’s still up in the air, but we feel pretty good because we came into the week ranked 27th and we went 2-1 to close the year after that,” said Serra. “We’ll take a couple days off, see where we stand and then hopefully start preparing for the tournament. Either way, it was an exciting season and I’m excited to see where we go from here.”
